The new RG dates conflicts with a total of TEN other tournaments of ATP and WTA. RG folks did not bother checking with any one of them, not to mention ATP, WTA, ITF or the players council.

I agree they shouldn't have made a unilateral decision, but I'm not sure what he means about being "deprived of points."

RG is given 2000 points. The point system is under the control of ATP. So, ATP can unilaterally say they will not recognize the points earned in the
new RG. Let us hope it does not come to that.

The unilateral decision by the French Federation to chose a new date for RG didn't sit well with the rest of the tennis governing bodies. That's not hard to understand. As we all know, the tennis calendar is a complicated juggling act. And even though the apple cart has been completely upended, they would do well to mend relations by working with the ITF, ATP and WTA to find a solution, as things become clearer. It will take some diplomacy, but I think it would serve them. As I said when it happened, I get why the FTF grabbed a good spot in the calendar, and I don't frankly give a rat's ass that it conflicts with the Laver Cup, which is still a glorified exhibition, IMO. That doesn't mean that noses weren't put out of joint, toes weren't stepped on, and it doesn't mean that the French Open gets that slot, if everyone else in tennis decides they don't. No reason to turn it into a total shit-show. They need to all talk it out.

Sorry but the “German” Tennis Federation “vice-president” Dirk Hordorff doesn’t know all the details of what the French Open did or didn’t do in terms of discussions, and he doesn’t speak for the ITF, ATP or WTA. His statement in one article should be taken with a grain of salt, in fact he seems just jealous as if the French Federation might have found some solution while others might not. We will eventually find the details from more reliable and important sources. I’d be very surprised if there was zero discussions between “RG” and the ITF, ATP, etc.

That's helpful, thanks. But that would certainly mean that there would have been a lot of ill-will engendered by all of this. Definitely hope it doesn't get that ugly, but that's why I'm saying the French Federation needs to draw on some very diplomatic forces within them to mend fences. This "season" has been falling apart and this virus has been moving faster than people can take things on board. The French Federation over-stepped. Now they have to make things right.

Since this is a speculation thread, what about this: let's say the curve is flattened by early summer. US, Europe and Asia seem under control. There could be a summer clay season, perhaps even including Rome and Madrid, culminating in the French Open, in the slot where the US Open is usually played. Then a switch to HC. Maybe Canada, Cincy, then USO at the end of Sept/early Oct. From there, either Shanghai or IW. Personally, I would drop the Asian swing, as it's more for the money than the crowds, and given the abbreviated calendar I'm suggesting, I'd go with the best events. Or do Asia and swap Bercy for IW. Then play the YEC. It could work, if the virus cooperates.

Newport USA is still a possibility considering it is a (actually, the only) grass tourney post Wimbledon. All grass tourneys leading up to Wimbledon and Wimbledon will be cancelled though.

I think we're probably pretty stuffed until August at the earliest. Maybe the Citi Open or Rogers Cup? I'm just hoping for a US Hard Court season and the start of football seasons (NFL and European Football Leagues). I had volunteered to work on the Junior World Squash Court Championships in July... they emailed today to say they were cancelled :(

It sucks to know there won't be any tennis for a few months more and any other sport most likely too.

Wimbledon is gone.

The French Open perhaps could be salvaged for the fall, but they would have to renovate for more lighted courts, which is doable.

As to the USO, just have it relocate for this one year to Indian Wells in October. IW's stadium is so big most people would think it's still Flushing Meadows...:good:

Now that I think of it, they don’t even need to play Roland Garros. They should not risk people’s lives and instead simply give the trophy to Nadal like pretty much every year. So basically they only have to figure out the details about the trophy ceremony. :trophy::good:
