If I'm Nadal I wouldn't bother with the WTF. Look, it's nice to have on your resume, but he would have been a heavy underdog to Federer as it is without the knee injury. He clearly wasn't moving well at all last night and if this is going to hamper him in London then he's got no shot. Majors are all that count for him right now so the best thing to do is rest and prepare for next season since Djokovic and Murray will be back and the competition should be sturdier.

Don't worry...Roger's back could go, too, and then we'll just wait and see who limps across the finish line first. That would be a rather fitting end to 2017.

Has it come to this now? Wishing ill on the other guy? :lol6:

Rafa should call it a year like Broken said. What a year it has been! He should not risk it after so many matches and it is the fast indoor hard court season anyway, which is the weak part of the year for him even when at full strength. He needs to be thinking about Melbourne and then Paris--those are the big two for him going forward. Indian Wells and Miami are the next most important, but he has had his time there and they may have to be sacrificed in the years to come as well.

It was a joke, trying to counteract Carol's prophylactic sour grapes. I figured someone would have to take it the wrong way.

It's always been like this from both camps to be honest (not saying everyone does it). I admire Darth for being honest about it.

personally I'm less fussed about the other guys doing well. More focused on the players I support winning. I figure if they take care of their business the rest won't matter

I just saw that Nadal pulled out of Paris with a knee injury. Did I or did I not say he was stupid to play that event and risk further injury once Roger pulled out? Hard courts and indoors. Why even bother when he was so far ahead of Roger in points and would have won the 1 match he needed to clinch YE #! at the WTF? I have no doubt he'll try to play the WTF because he's never won it - and aside from Roger there's very little competition this year.

On another note - Isner beat DelPo so DelPo won't make the WTF and Carreno Busta is in unless Isner, Sock or Pouille wins the title and then that person gets the 8th spot. That means unless Cilic wins the tourney there'll be another 1st time Masters 1000 winner in Paris. Kinda sums up 2017 in a nutshell - the major event winners was either Roger (AO, IW, Miami, WImbledon, Shanghai), Rafa (MC, Madrid, FO, USO) or a first-timer (Zverev (twice), Dimitrov)..

PS - If Roger wins the WTF, then how is he not Player of the Year with 6 big titles to Nadal's 4? Yes, it traditionally goes to YE #1...but...I'm just saying...when Roger played he won more often than Nadal did... (I threw this bit in for Carol cuz I know she loves to debate Roger vs. Rafa...:))

Only if he wins the title. Cilic is the last man standing...and yet somehow I'm sure he'll find a way to lose this tournament...

Just think - if Isner, Pouille or Sock wins...they get the 8th spot. Isner's 32. It'll probably be his last chance to make the tour finals. He's been close before so let's see how badly he wants it.

Oh no Delpo!!!

Obviously he's not quite back yet. He won a 250 event but lost a 500 and can't make the finals of a 1000. But in the long run these tight matches are good for him. I'll go out on a limb and predict he makes a Slam final next year - and possibly wins one. HIs backhand is looking better and he really should be in the Top 5 with Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray.. No offense to Stan, Cilic and Zverev...

JMDP misses the cut for WTF by losing. Both Isner and Sock have theoretical chances to make it. But, most probably it will be PCB for the last slot. This is because I think both Isner and Sock need to win Bercy outright to qualify. But, I think Cilic will lift the trophy.

Is Delpo totally out of the race with this loss? And doesn't Isner have to win the whole thing to get in? If not, who does?

Unfortunately, yes. Unless someone (Rafa?) pulls out of London, JMDP will not be playing there. JMDP will probably be an alternate there.
The last remaining spot goes to PCB unless Isner or Sock wins Bercy outright, in which case the winner of Bercy will get the last spot.

Roger's back was dodgy in Basel. You could tell from his terrible service stats. 38% in 1 match. He withdrew wisely from Paris. Basel though short appeared to take a lot out of him. He played some tough matches in a short time span.

(You know I was only kidding about that.) Roger says playing Basel is emotionally draining for him, too.
