(You know I was only kidding about that.) Roger says playing Basel is emotionally draining for him, too.

Of course I knew you were kidding about hoping Roger's back goes. I don't personally like to see ANY players injured and would rather see the guys I like whoop fully fit versions of the guys I don't like. As great a year as it's been for both Roger and Rafa, the tour has missed Djokovic and Murray. No fan of Murray but obviously he's a top player who is conspicuous by his absence. The more fully fit guys on tour (especially top ranked), the better for tennis.

Unfortunately, yes. Unless someone (Rafa?) pulls out of London, JMDP will not be playing there. JMDP will probably be an alternate there.
The last remaining spot goes to PCB unless Isner or Sock wins Bercy outright, in which case the winner of Bercy will get the last spot.

It's amazing how that happens, but this is truly scraping the bottom of the barrel with so many players out with injuries! Reminds me when Davydenko took the YEC! He may have been ranked as high as #4 in the world, the competition just wasn't what it is right now! This is just unfathomable the draw will be so depleted! Isner? Sock? Never thought I'd see such undeserving players even in the running to make it in! JMDP is my "dark horse" to still make it! Not sure Nadal wants to go yet again to walk away without a trophy! That court is fast and he'll be tired and limping around on that knee! Not sure he could even make it through this weak a field! We'll see what happens!  o_O

Can Julien Benneteau be the Cinderella story of Bercy?? That would be nice.

Benneteau is the only player who can win Bercy, but still not make it to London.

Benneteau has never won a title in his whole life, not even a 250. All of a sudden, he winning 1000 seems too far fetched.

I just saw that Nadal pulled out of Paris with a knee injury. Did I or did I not say he was stupid to play that event and risk further injury once Roger pulled out? Hard courts and indoors. Why even bother when he was so far ahead of Roger in points and would have won the 1 match he needed to clinch YE #! at the WTF? I have no doubt he'll try to play the WTF because he's never won it - and aside from Roger there's very little competition this year.

On another note - Isner beat DelPo so DelPo won't make the WTF and Carreno Busta is in unless Isner, Sock or Pouille wins the title and then that person gets the 8th spot. That means unless Cilic wins the tourney there'll be another 1st time Masters 1000 winner in Paris. Kinda sums up 2017 in a nutshell - the major event winners was either Roger (AO, IW, Miami, WImbledon, Shanghai), Rafa (MC, Madrid, FO, USO) or a first-timer (Zverev (twice), Dimitrov)..

PS - If Roger wins the WTF, then how is he not Player of the Year with 6 big titles to Nadal's 4? Yes, it traditionally goes to YE #1...but...I'm just saying...when Roger played he won more often than Nadal did... (I threw this bit in for Carol cuz I know she loves to debate Roger vs. Rafa...:))
Roger is player of the year even if he doesn't win the WTF...

Earlier today I said I was sure Cilic would find a way to blow what should be a cake walk to the Paris title. Glad to see I wasn't wrong and he continues to underachieve.

But...to answer your question...no Benneteau's not going to be a Cinderella story. I think it far more like that Isner or Sock will be because a win will get them into the WTF.

I have said it before. The player of the award is given by ITF committee and they typically go by points won at ITF events (slams) and so Rafa is sure to get it as he has more points won in Slams than Roger. However, it is a vote by a committee and they can vote to whomever they want. But, they rarely deviate from the "points won at itf events" formula.

I have no problem with Rafa winning it. He put in the miles fair and square. I don't think he's been the best player this year, but he's a fitting player of the year

Although it is informally known as "player of the year", it is officially called "world champion". Both Roger and Novak have won it five times. Rafa has won it only twice so far (not including the anticipated award of this year).

Luckily, I don't think most really care about player of the year so irrespective of the choice (that will inevitably make the other fan-base angry), it'll only lead to a week or so of a debate, rather than the usual year-long wars.

Who is this guy Krajinovic. I literally haven't heard of him before. He looks like a baller. Anyone who stops Isner in his tracks is tops in my book. Mopey fucker...

Outstanding performance from the qualifier! Where did this guy come from. Would love Benneteau to win the whole thing though

Wow, this is one of the most surprising results I can remember.
Similar to Janowicz, when he made the final here.

Even though he was helped by Rafa's withdrawal, to defeat both American towers in the same event, is quite something for an unheralded player ranked 77.
