With Tsonga not playing, now Monfils, Gasquet, and Simon gone. First time since '05 none of these 4 will appear in 2nd Rd. at RG.

They can join the club of host nations of major events who can't buy representation at their own championships some years! The US is just getting it back; esp. with the ladies! Barty's a top player, but still hasn't done much better than a SF this year "down under!" :)

French Association has always had a good junior academy at present, especially with the men there is no rising star coming through.

France and Spain have been spoiled for well over a decade with huge teams that can go up against the world and succeed! It had to come to an end sooner or later!

As to tomorrow, Thiem gets Sock instead of Opelka. I don't expect Sock to win, but he's going to make Thiem work harder for it than he would have v. Riley. On the upside for Thiem, has anyone noticed that Schwartzman is playing doubles? Does that seem wise?

Aussie Marc Polmans (L) defeated Humbert today in 4 sets......Moutet to me has a more all round game,we shall see I guess.
I know they're not there yet, but I was just saying there are a few in the pipeline for France. And for Spain. Munar acquitted himself well today, even though he lost. But I do get that they don't look to have the same deep roster of players any time soon, when the old guard retires.

I noticed that yesterday Diego playing doubles? one would think that making the final at Rome in singles which was a great result he would have enough preparation for RG,these conditions are harder than they were in Rome.It could come back to bite him.

The nice thing with the heavier conditions is that Jack could really whale on that forehand. It is a thing of beauty....:)

It is a nice forehand when it's on song. He's got serious topspin, too, which may not take as much, in these conditions. But he's a solid baseliner, with real net game. And a really good 2nd serve. There's a lot of water under the bridge for Sock, but it's nice to see him still around. I don't expect him to win, but I'm going to guess that Dominic will be wishing he'd had Opelka.

That's the thing, everybody is still trying to figure out whose playing style is favored in these conditions but NOBODY really knows. From what I've seen so far, players of all stripes seem to do OK, and as usual, the mental fortitude seems the biggest factor, ATBE. I mean, clay court tennis in Paris in the fall with the temperature dropping dramatically at times...we don't have a track record.. All things being equal a heavy topspin still helps on a red clay surface. As far as hitting through the ball, then you have to figure conditioning, etc.

Again, many are HOPING/PRAYING it doesn't favor certain players....:) But geeze , it's still red clay tennis. It didn't suddenly morph into indoor the ATP YE Finals court in London.

Very good win for Shapovalov today. That was a good bounce back after the loss to Schwartzman, which was a match he had multiple chances to win and really should have. He lost it in a very similar way to how Federer used to lose to Nadal on clay: getting every opportunity in the world to seize it but not closing the deal.

And what to say about Rublev, what an unbelieavable comeback. Did he cry at the end due to emotions? I like Rublev, his grunting when he slaps that forehand is special. You don't need to watch, just hear and you now it's that russian.
