good win by Nadal it was smart for him to choose to go down a break to play himself into form, also really bad the umpire unfairly warning Nadal for nothing. djokovic would have lost the match the way gerasimov was playing LOL

Preach! ;-):

I've never seen players struggling to hold the serve like this RG. Medvedev and Fucsovics are swinging out their mind, full blast, but it all looks slow. Serve is nothing, you could easily serve 2 second serves and save power.

It makes you wonder if big servers will change their tactics to conserve energy. One thing is for certain if your movement is suspect and your ground game is weak; you are going to struggle here.

Glad to see Bob winning in straights.
He needs to save energy for his QF and SF.
I’m a bit concerned he will not reach the F.
He was not looking good, and that after being destroyed by Diego on slow clay court. Novak won against Schwartzman with very good level.
Novak is best on clay so far.
Hopefully Bob can roll into form to put down the Boobs and the Sensitive one, but there is big doubt he will.
Did you sincerely think he looked bad? I think he looked really solid. Shame Gerasimov got injured, though.

And Medvedev loses the set on a point penalty for destroying his racquet.

Gerasimov said even though Rafa has not had a lot of matches on clay, his form was solid and it was tough winning points against him

That was weird, when he smashed the racket I didn't know he had a warning from before. There is also some tensions between him and Marton, Danill shooted at him at the net and Marton got pissed off. So far, Medvedev has no clue how to win the point, but Fucsovics when playing peak tennis can be hard to beat and right now I am impressed with what I see a guy barely misses anything, Daniil throwed everything at him at that crucial point in TB and still lost it.

Well done Fucsovics defeated Med 64 76(3) 26 61!

Med needs to hire a clay coach.......maybe Med and Kerber (woman) can share a clay coach both went out in their first rd matches

At least Med is consistent this is his fourth straight year losing in rd 1 at RG

Medvedev continues with R1 loss tradition in RG. He really has no clay court game, no angles at all and very little variety. Marton outplayed him.

Technically while it doesn't suit his game perfectly there is no reason for such a poor record at Roland Garos. Hell, even John Isner has a better FO record...

Those 1st round losses here and in Rome through the years makes me think he just HATES playing on red clay; doesn't mean when Medvedev is "on" he can't do well occasionally but mentally I just think he checks out. The dust, the skidding and sliding on the surface, the marks on the court to determine calls, etc , for what ever reasons I just think Medvedev isn't comfortable and can't wait to get off the court. He could adjust, has the court movement and endurance but just seems to refuse to.

In his mind, HC is his bread and butter and to hell with red clay.

We don't usually think of Europeans that way, but a hard hitting HC American player we just assume they don't "get"red clay.
Hence Medvedev.

I still think this is a head-scratcher. His game "should" transfer to red clay. He's smart, he's crafty, he's adaptable. He plays great from the baseline. He may not know how to slide into and out of a shot, but even Sharapova, who said she was a "cow on ice" on clay won RG. I agree that he needs a clay coach.

And as to the racquet smash...I'm not against that, per se, but he gave up a set for a fit of petulance. That is not a mentality that impresses me. As @MargaretMcAleer said, he knew he was giving up the set. Even though he was down 3-6 in the TB, I'd have been much more impressed if he'd fought for it, even if he lost.

Some marathon matches today. Coretin Moutet lost 16-18 to Giustino in the 5th. I doubt anyone picked Giustino in that one. Heartbreaker for the young and promising Frenchman. Sandgren, sadly, prevailed over Hurkacz, 11-9 in the 5th.

I wanted to like Med, comparing him to a player from the past, "The Cat," Miloslav Mečíř! Unfortunately he's just too sloppy in his movement and stroke production to own that moniker! He'll always be dangerous, but he's so inconsistent of late! One day a world beater, the next can't get out of the 1st RD!
