That's great, Carol. It reminds me of when Rafa was interviewed by RTE (Spanish TV) just as he was coming off the court after beating Novak in the SFs in Beijing. The interviewer reminded him that he was guaranteed a medal, and he started to lose it, a bit. He said he was very tired. As I'm sure he was today, but the emotion of knowing they've got a medal did get to him, then, as now. :)

Rafa says: " I'm very happy, extremely excited and to enjoy this moment in the Olympics especially with one of my best friends, with Marc, is something unforgettable. We are extremely happy, with high emotions on court, lost of nerves, we really enjoy it a lot. Just a moment to enjoy because we have a silver and now try and be ready for tomorrow"

The Murray match was weird. He was lucky to pull it out. And I'm thrilled with Monfils 2.0.

rafa is soooooooo emotional, isn't it? emotional in a way that he really lets people ''in'' as if you're the one being there. so nice to see.

I found the video. I was going to put it on the Rafa fan page, but couldn't find it (@britbox ??) It's in Spanish, so sorry for those that don't understand, but I think you get it.)

So the QFs are set:

Delpo v. RBA
Rafa v. Bellucci

Le Monf v. Nishikori
Stevie Johnson v. Andy

did any of us even consider that rafa and delpo would be even ready to get THIS far? it suddenly hits me.

now for the real ''business end" of the tournament. amazing how things are ending up where we are still left with big questions in terms of how closely matched the players can still be.

andy near or at the top of HIS game - defending gold champ..wimbledon champ..
delpo seemingly holding up so well and beginning to look more consistently like ''the TANK"..

Rafa being Rafa more and more..
Kei his accustomed consistency and uncanny way to find a way..
Bautista-Agut quietly showing he can threaten
Monfils proving getting down to business reminds everyone why he's always been one of the very best athletes out there
and what can anyone say about Stevie Johnson? i mean the guy has had such a difficult career -- and THERE he is --

right along with the best of the best.

really nice to see.

i missed the MIDDLE set!! but caught beginning and end sets mostly -- so couldn't see just how that weirdness went -- but i 'm sure you all describe it as it must have been.

maybe it's just the pressure of knowing it is HIS GOLD that he's defending. but andy's a great fighter even at times when he gets in his way.

the ''gilles test" against players was GOOD for RAFA i thought -- it's good for rafa to have that ''reminder" and find out how he can come up with his old ability to stay in the point AND finally come up with that amazing ability to come up with shots..and a good test of how his wrist manages with LONG points.

if anyone saw -- i am not sure if i was seeing that his SERVING in the DOUBLES was a LOT strong! i was surprised by that -- lots of very flat first serves ...was nice to see that from him.

and TRUE -- let's hope and wish for GAEL that he STAYS with THIS concentration and seriousness -- consistency match by match , set by set -- from now on !! when he's ON -- it's just incredible to watch him.

perhaps better for RAFA - it's enough that he's playing a doubles to be his ''practice'' running around and in all court playing and net - and also sharpening his serves against 2 players covering the service box defense...

that way -- it's a better balance between 'match sharpness" , reaction, etc..as well as more rest time

I think he's taking it more seriously than a practice for a Singles... a gold is a gold after all. Silver medal assured at least.

oh definitely he takes it seriously

there's NO guarantee getting gold to any of them -- so doubles getting him'/them already a silver is at least 'in the bank' just for being in RIO.

but i had in mind - at least being ''out there competing" as sort of practice session instead of yet another hour of private practice...it takes care of the endurance and that kind of thing..u know -- the general - day to day fitness and muscle tone.

remember how Steffi used to go about it? she said that she got most of her actual ''exercise" in the matches -- apart from the running -- even if of course she practice also.

what she meant was she had no taste for going to the GYM and do all the ''drills" (like probably these updated things they do -- big balls , crunches, lifting weights, and all that...

she said in an interview she really hated even the thought of it..and DIDN'T want to grow big muscles! i really read it . and so she basically built whatever power she had in her shots from the actual tennis playing or practicing itself -- and then for 'fitness' in general -- she just ran. that's all she did.

one of her reasons was that not only did she not like all the ''other things" like so common nowadays - outside of the tennis court or playing itself -- she had to take care of so many things so early -- the business, the family obligations as her dad's peccadilloes , womanizing, etc..crept up - and she had to become her mom's ''friend" and then her brother married and had a baby - and not least her many interests outside of tennis..

which included -- painting (i think she mentioned water-color painting only but wanted to learn oil painting) - and she got into serious photography and was dreaming of one day having her own exhibition , and also mentioned she wanted to seriously learn piano, -- and not least - she said she HAD to have her time in reading books and novels...

on top of course of her ''star-related" obligations and projects like calendar spreads for Wildlife conservation, children's causes, drug addiction causes, and the community and school projects she had in south africa that she periodically visited..

i saw those pictures with the buildings in the villages that she helped build and the community and children projects...

an online friend in those 1990's told me - as she sometimes would e mail me ''latest private pics" of steffi with those people - that steffi ''walks very fast ...always in a rush because of so many commitments -- i'm always running right behind her!! but she never declines people asking for autograph as she keeps going!!".

i had a tape from that online friend that showed steffi in private practice.wearing all black which the friend said WAS the favorite color of steffi, lol.

TONS of TOPSPIN backhands -- that were SO heavy...and it's just a mystery she NEVER displayed as a regular weapon like HENIN became famous for? and i saw her go through her DOUBLE HAND backhand , would you believe? as GOOD as any we see today that's become so common.

AGAIN something she never revealed in her career ...can you imagine? but i recall one interview in whcih she was asked WHAT shot she would have liked to ''add" --

and she said "i would like to have had MORE TIME to add in my practice my two-handed backhands"

meaning -- she HAD it - but probably everything was already calculated in terms of just how much TIME does one really have to cover everything in the arsenal when you're right in the middle of a career where the one in practice - her serves, returns, slices, forehand, -- were already working just fine ?

so -- can you just imagine how much more ''complete' her arsenal might have become WITHOUT all the other obligations to allow her add that extra hour for these TWO other shots she actually possessed? TOPSPIN and TWO HANDER?

I remember Navatilova was always complaining, kind of, after MN ''retired'" that

"i just can't understand why steffi doesn't volley more often -- she's such an amazing volleyer and did it so much against me - there !!! did you see that? she did a volley just now -- and everytime she does it she looks just like an amazing doubles player at the net!! why doesn't she do it more?"

so -- what i gathered from all that is this:

that graf had SHOTS that people rarely if ever saw and by the ''absence' of those shots in matches -- then would say "she's just forehand with a weak backhand" ..

when in fact -- she actually had mastery over those shots - but for some reason preferred or decided they were not needed for her to win consistently or just demanded time she really did not have anymore.

but i seem to remember her response to that sort of ''suggestion" from interviewer about people wondering why she relied on slice so much -- and she said

"why fix something that isn't broken?"

i also remember clearly some small tournament she won in her comeback after her knee thingie ..and they didn't protect her ranking at all -- and she had to start rank number 60 or something like that...and so REALLY had to earn her return to eventual number 3 when she won her last FO?

IN that little tournament, hardcourt - when fans against her online would put her down calling her ''queen of small tournaments" -- as hingis was then the new number one --

and steffi's ''nemesis" amanda coetzer tried a shot midstream that surprised steffi and amanda won that game or point...

the next time amanda tried it -- steffi was ready and answered the SAME WAY and won the point or game -- and amanda didn't try it again --

you know what it was?

amanda ''tricked' steffi by SWITCHING HANDS mid-point -- so the trajectory of course was suddenly changed.

next time she tried -- STEFFI responded by ALSO switching hands and WON .MEANING playing LEFTIE! HEHE.

i SAW IT live on tv -- one of those before the USO and just before steffi played and won the hardcourt PILOT OPEN OVER number one HINGIS and then NUMBER 2 DAVENPORT . but the ''leftie" shots were , i think in late 1998 and she was really struggling ....since that 1997 knee surgery and her months away...which was when she returned in that 1998 to prepare for her last season 1999.

. it was so funny!

interesting isn't it?

I can't remember which year it was Teddy, but I remember Steffi going away from the slice backhand against Navratilova and really hurting her with topspin backhands. Nav wasn't expecting it all. Steffi could hit a topspin backhand with the best, but her slice was so damn good she didn't need to move out of her comfort zone very often and on grass it was a murderous.

Talking of gyms, I remember Murray saying a few years ago when he got pretty ripped that it was dealing with Nadal's physicallity that forced him to hit the gym.

it's so long ago now, BRITBOX...and so seldom since that steffi used more of her full complement of weapons - that we , even as big steffi fans can barely recall them...

and it's just a good thing you reminded me of that long ago...but if even only her slice which is famous --

i just remember still quite clearly that in the only chance i had to see her in person in madison square against monica in that 1998 WTA chamionships (steffi lost to lindsay who beat , i think, PATTY SCHNYDER the big hitting , topspinner from switzerland , remember her? she was so good -- who beat nmber one hingis...)

that as steffi proceeded to ''slice down" monica's famous two hander power ''from both wings" -- before unleashing her own forehands -- -- i was myself SO NERVOUS not really because i was afraid steffi would lose -- but that seeing those slices in real action - not TV -- I realized how DANGEROUSLY RISKY and difficult they must have been to consistently send them sooooooooooooooooooooo low over that net tape!!

i mean NO ONE -- not today -- not THEN -- DARED it as steffi did..it was literally an inch or less over the net, again and again and again...

who DOES THAT? or has the courage and/or mastery to do it that way?

NOT federer, NOT ANYONE...and that was when i realized in FULL the magnificence of steffi's technical command .

let us remember that PART of topspin is to ''clear the net safely" with heavy weight ..but the MAIN REASON is to keep the point and ball IN without the RISK of ''how to clear the net" first of all!

i mean it's pointless if a tennis player ''can't get the ball OVER the net" ...

and THAT'S one obvious reason we have the 2000's become so ''topspin leaning" ...
which shows that with such RISKY -- but HIGH reward (if you can do it) - shots of steffi --

the FLAT hard forehands - and the very, very low slices -- reflected a player with such MASTERY of the skill itself..that is reserved only for very few..

=============

andy --remember his ''showing the biceps" years ago ? that was so cute! hehe.

i recall in some other website -- i used to argue -- after i suggested "imo, andy needs to ADD maybe 5-10 pounds of MUSCLE weight and all that magnificently built natural athleticism , that body, the proportions of shoulders -- wide and angular, long clavicles above the chest, the length of thighs to lower legs, the length of torso to legs..etc...he's gonna be magnificent - especially when he gets INTO the court".

and boy -- did i get a LOT of flack for suggesting he needed a few more pounds in muscle because what do i really know? lol.

but i've always considered andy murray as having one of the most IDEALLY proportioned bodies for tennis. just beautifully put together especially for tennis, i always thought -- and I AM NOT a tennis player at all -- just understand or got to know it just because ilove watching it so much . and the most i ever got to ''playing" was in the park on grass with non-athletic friends just to play around and hit the ball so far away we couldn't find where it went. and that' s IT when i realized 'this must be so difficult to learn and takes so much time - forget it!!"

lol;.
