If Flavia can maintain that she can get invited to Singapore (or is it some other town) WTF.

It seems bizarre to see Venus and Vika drop in rankings after making the QFs. I guess thats just how the rankings shake out these days.

Also bizarre that Caroline is still #6 after a disappointing USO and a to put it politely season with "mixed results" that in truth has been dreadful compared to what was expected after what she did in the second half of 2014. Not that I object. I love Wozzy. But she can count her lucky stars that those that were ranked immediately below her also lost early. But if her results don't dramatically improve that nosedive in the rankings will be inevitable.

I don't know if she even cares about this possible development. She just did the thing she probably thought she could never do. That probably trumps everything else at this point methinks.

I actually almost said the same thing. I held back on saying it because I really do like Caroline a lot. Still it seems odd to see her at number 6 after a season where I can't really remember any specific stellar results.

She can hold on so long because in the first half of the year she didn't have anything to defend. The vast majority of her points came in the second half of 2014. Those are now starting to come off and she will go down fast if she doesn't significantly improve from now on.

I really hope to see her back where she was...What changed so fast? Was it the breakup motivating her or was the marathon conditioning helping her? Its really hard to know what the variable was or if she just had a good 6 months.

The breakup must have motivated her because the improvement was too immediate and big to be merely a coincidence. Training for that marathon must have done her a power of good as well. But those runs will have been 10-15 km, and will I presume mostly have taken place in parks and forrests. But actually running 42 km against the clock (because it's obvious that she wanted to surprise us with setting a good time) on concrete and pavement may at least partly explain why all year she's been going from one little niggle or injury to the next and why she now has that jumpers knee. Plus she's gone back to her passive defensive game while last year, and especially at the YEC she was more pro-active than usual. Not that it was Kvitova-like, but she had found sort of the right balance between offense and defense for someone with her skill set. When the season was over I thought, "wow, if she can continue like this in 2015 we may be in for something special." But it wasn't to be since she went back to her passive defensive game while her defense isn't as effective as it was in 2009-2011 because she doesn't move as well as she did back then (although it's still above average of course) and because she makes too many errors on routine shots, which is something she never used to do when she was at her best or most effective.

Perhaps, she should try to break up with someone every year and especially sometime before an impending slam. ;)

A lot of movements in the rankings this late in the year. With only a few tournaments left and the WTA Finals about to drop off it's almost more accurate at this point to look at Race Rankings than real rankings.
