Look at the # of tourneys played by these girls. Many played over 20 and some have played as much as 32. No wonder most of them are wasted by the end of the season.

The problem is not with the WTA calendar. The problem is with these girls making poor decisions.
They are playing way more than the number of tourneys that will be counted for the rankings.

Aga, Belinda, Caroline ----------- 24
Kerber, CSN, Vinci, JJ --------- 25
Pliskova, Errani, Cornet --------- 26
Kristina, Zarina, Kurumi ------- 27

No. of countable tournaments is only 16 + WTA finals.

Completely agree. That's too much. You do that for 10 months and you will be fried mentally and have all sorts of physical problems. While the WTA makes a rule about the minimum, maybe they need to set up a maximum number as well? But that's opening up a whole other can of worms. But players need to just stop complaining about the requirements. You hear about them complaining, but then a whole bunch of them are playing in Paes' new team tennis gig.

So, Vika managed to get into top 16. She won't face Serena before R16. Entire last year, she was running into top players very early. Of course, that was her fault; she thought she is too good to play in small tourneys and move her rankings up. Hope this year works better for her.

Well, she faced Serena in quarterfinals of Wimbledon last year, so not sure 16 ranking does her much favor, yet.

If Serena can hold on to her #1 ranking till the end of September, she will be the #1 in the list of players to have spent many weeks at #1 spot continuously. See the following graphic . She is virtually guaranteed to take over Martina, by the end of February.

It won't be easy especially depends on how well her body holds up. Good news for Serena is if she is consistent and can win at least two slams then she stands a good shot as everyone else is wildly inconsistent. I can't see anyone realistically having a shot until probably the French Open/Wimbledon depending on how the rest of the field does. Halep confirmed no Doha/Dubai and I believe she won one of those titles last year, so she will be sliding down the rankings a bit I suspect. Serena played neither and could pick up points at one.

This being a record about "consecutive weeks", she better get it done right now. She surely won't get another chance to break these records.

We also have to remember she can pick up points in Indian Wells, Madrid, Rome, the Olympics, and the YEC, so realistically depending on how consistent she can make it in the slams she can hold on for another year to number 1. Oh and in Beijing too. She has some good wiggle room, but the slams come first, and with that consecutive weeks and who knows maybe total weeks at number 1 is a possibility.

Forget about YEC, Beijing etc which are after Sep. 19th. First Goal is to retain #1 until Sep. 19th which will ensure breaking of consecutive weeks at #1. I think it is quite possible.

In total weeks, she is behind by about 100 weeks right now and so it is bit far off at this moment.

p.s. Olympics has no points this year.
