There are a lot of interesting things happening with rank. Aga is back in top 8. Azarenka is back in the top 20. Muguruza is in the top 15 as well as Venus. Interesting fact, should Serena win Wimbledon she will be 6670 points ahead of Maria. I don't even think Maria could catch her at that point because while Serena has a lot to defend during the summer and the YEC, Maria has a great fall to defend. Maria would have to be absolutely flawless to pass Serena and even then I don't think she would.

Maria would need to win USO, Beijing and do well at the YEC and even then it still won't be enough.

Serena defends 5286 after Wimbledon where Maria defends 2170. Given the fact that the summer hard court season hasn't been her strong suit and Serena and Azarenka love the hard courts I doubt Maria can catch Serena. I think if Serena wins 1 or 2 hard court titles before the Open she is guaranteed #1 for the year.

This means the effective lead of Serena over Maria is 3554. This means after Wimby if Maria can outperform (she should earn this much more than Serena) Serena by 3554 points, she will overtake Serena.

Which I think will be a tall task of Maria given the fact that I would put Serena and Azarenka ahead of her in terms of favorites to earn hard court titles. I think Serena can make up ground in Beijing and Petra usually enjoys the fall as well. I think this time of year is very competitive for titles. Maria would have to be flawless for the rest of the year, and Serena would have to majorly mess up and given what Serena has produced this year it doesn't look like it is going to go that way.

Garbine is now an official top 10 player debuting at #9 and now the #1 Spanish player with a win she can go to #6. With a win, Serena will officially be 6670 points ahead of Maria. She is currently about 7000 ahead of Simona. She essentially is locked down for number 1 for the year. She would have to not play for the rest of the year and Maria would have to win everything she is scheduled for and add a tourney or two to take it from Serena.

Do we even have a number 2 player it keeps switching between Sharapova, Petra and Halep, but....I am going with #1 and everyone else. I would say Azarenka, but the others have won decent titles and Azarenka not yet.

That's stunning. It must be a record split between the top two.

Vika may only be up to 19, but she's now only 1000 points away from the top 10. I imagine she can get herself at least into the top 16 by the US Open. Fingers crossed she'll finally be in the other side of the draw from Serena.

Giant leap forwards from Muguruza. Also, welcome back in the top 10 Aga. Plus, poor Genie and her seemingly never-ending slump to end all slumps.

The top 10 is still in a really weird place. It feels strange that Woz can be ranked that high. It feels like Halep is still buoyed by good results from Wimbledon last year through March of this year. Aga made 1 semifinal and suddenly she's back in the top 10. I'm happy to see Mugu in the top 10 I hope she stays there with decent results the remainder of the year. This is not a very consistent looking top 10.

Serena's lead over Maria is 6671. Maria's current points is 6490. In other words, #1 Serena has more than double the points that #2 Maria has. :speechless:

By October, Serena will be third on the list of most weeks at number one. Only Graf and Martina will be ahead of her.

I moved all comments about Serena's rivals and the state of the other women to another thread. Thought it would be a good place to discuss all rivalries (especially when comparing retired players to current players, etc.)

Most consecutive Weeks #1 -WTA

Steffi Graf 186
Martina N. 156
Serena 126 (and counting)

I would assume passing Martina is a given for Serena (Feb of next year?). Depending on how the first half of 2016 pans out, Steffi's record is well within her reach. The other thing is even if a new "star" emerges from the WTA, it would take most of a year of results to catch up to Serena if Serena even has modified success for the first part of 2016. I just don't see Maria, Petra K, Halep , etc. having that staying power among the vets, Vika, maybe..but that's a hell of a jaunting journey to undertake.

Is she scheduled to play Stanford? If she's not, why didn't she play Istanbul? That's a HC and w/ the current field of players there, she could have secured a title and got her ranking up some.
