Btw, Djokovic just released a statement on instagram:
He states that he attended a basketball game in Belgrade on 12/14 where many tested positive for covid
On 12/16, he took a rapid antigen test, which was negative
Out of an abundance of caution, he took PCR test, on 12/16
The next day, he went to to an event before knowing of the result of PCR test. After event,. he was notified of positive result
The next day, he cancelled some events but did do 1 interview, wore a mask and practiced social distancing. He admits this was an error though
Next day he went home and isolated
He has also addressed the travel declaration. He claims that his support team submitted it and that it was a honest administrative mistake and that he has clarified facts with australian government.
So there you have it. We an certainly question why he conducted that interview but we now know about why he was at the earlier event with kids, he didn't know of positive result at the time. As far as travel declaration, well, a mistake by his team.... Will Australia deport him for this? The question i have is whether djokovic lied during the interview, if he didn't and its' just a matter of this administrative error.... hardly a big offense?
Deporting Djokovic and banning him for 3 years for above would be drastic and Australian government risks losing a court battle and humiliation yet again as Djokovic can challenge this as-well.
IMO, Australia needs to own their internal mess, how the different entities couldn't coordinate to properly handle this. If they deport and ban Djokovic, i', not sure they come out a winner here. The PM is probably just trying to figure out what would be the best political move, sadly.
