I am a lefty in everything lol!
I'm a lefty/righty, so I get why it's wasn't an artificial choice for Rafa to play tennis left-handed. Margaret, I know you're on the front lines in medical care, so just wanted to say: Stay safe!

Thanks soo much,it has been trying to say the least, with people 'spitting in faces of nurses and doctors' we have been told to change out of our uniforms after our shifts' so people do not attack us' I cannot believe this behavior'.

If the tour starts up post Wimbledon (July)then as things stand, this would be the longest non-injury related match play sabbatical that Nadal (and most players) has had in his professional career.

It’s hard to take an extended break these days because of defending computer ranking points, mandatory tournaments, sponsorships, etc.

I know that in the past Chris Evert and Johnny Mac took extended breaks from the tour because they were fried mentally ( Borg’s retirement started initially as that), and many veterans have commented that keeping mentallytough/motivated gets harder as the years go by.

With perhaps at least another 3 months off, Just curious as to how Rafa’s body/mental state will be if/when tournament play starts up again.
I don't see so much downside for Rafa. He can always stand a break to let those knees rest. And he doesn't generally find it hard to bring back the intensity. If anything, I think the top 3 guys will all come back rested and hungry for the competition. As a Nadal fan, though, I'm hoping that at least one other Major gets played this year. If they manage only RG, huge advantage to Rafa.

Wait...WHAT? Why would people be attacking nurses and doctors?

We work in hospitals where sick COVID-19 patients are and they think we will pass the virus onto them? especially nurses who have to travel on trains and buses to get to work, also some doctors do the same.I know a nurse who was spat in the face, she was horrified and sat on the train in disbelief, soon as she got to work reported it to the police. There are now huge fines in Sydney for anyone 'spitting' also police have been spat in the face, trying to make sure everyone keeps the social distancing rules that are in place.

OMG, Margaret, this horrifies me! I haven't heard of this. People blaming the caregivers? And the cops? Here, I would say it is the opposite. We're trying to appreciate all of our front-line people and we make a great noise every evening at 7pm. Do you think it's because it hasn't hit hard there yet? Anyway, this is for you:

Thanks,New Yorkers are great people, also people in London people have done a similar thing.
Well for such a small nation, our front line people really have not been congratulated like in NYC or London, though when our bush fires were bad earlier this year I must say the front line people were very appreciated and rightly so.
I think closing our borders was a good idea early, though we did have a outbreak of a cruise ship in March where people were allowed to get off and were carrying the virus and went back to their homes throughout Australia, some of those people have sadly passed away. Now Australians coming here are going straight to hotels to be checked and carry out 2 weeks isolation.
We are now coming into the Flu season which killed a lot of people last year,so it will be a trying time in the next few months.

Rafa is a form player. He generally takes time to get to his groove, but for sure he will eventually get into his groove. But, given that a GS will happen fairly immediately when the interrupted season starts, he may not be able to bite a trophy quick enough though.

What does a "form player" even mean? As to that he used to "play himself into form," that's a bit old news, isn't it? I think he's learned that he doesn't need to play 12 tournaments to win one. They'll all start rusty, but I think Nadal tends to train hard, and so comes out hotter.

It's a relatively level playing field in that no one will have a marked advantage over someone returning from injuries, etc. A physical and mental break at this stage in Rafa's career, i.e. turning 34 this summer I feel is more win than loss for him as far as extending his career. I wasn't comfortable at all with the scheduled 3 Majors and Olympics squeezed in this summer/fall. Of course if we have the fortune to have a season next year the worrying starts again over the tennis calendar.... These days seems so far off

Love the "worrying." It is the bane of our existence as Nadal fans, given that even Rafa himself acknowledges that he passed his sell-by date at around 29. Personally, I'm still hoping for the Atlantic-Slam, if they manage to play USO and RG this year.

Rafa Nadal is focusing on Coronavirus relief efforts, not tennis.Nadal dosen't anticipate tennis events re-starting any time soon and he's not concentrating on it either. In a interview with El Partidazo and El Transitor radio,he said holding tournaments would be difficult even with no fans in the stands."
"That is not the issue" he said."The issue is what is required for organization of any event in tennis. But tennis is a global sport, week by week,it seems difficult there could be an official tournament. In this sense,in tennis we have to have responsibilty."
On a personal level,Nadal says he's concentrating more on coronavirus pandemic relief efforts. The Spainard and basketball player Pau Gasol raising 7 million Euros as a start to a campaign to collect 9 million euros for Spain.

On this day in 2005, Rafa entered the Top 10, and has not been out of it since. The rankings are frozen now, of course, but when they resume, he needs 12 more weeks in the Top 10 to pass Connors for all-time # of consecutive weeks in the Top 10...and most of those at #1 or #2.

It really is sort of amazing, given his number of injury lay-offs. Injury sent Roger and Andy out of the Top 10, and Novak's walkabout/injury sent him out, as well. A tribute to Rafa's consistency.

Well said. Rafa’s consistency is only matched by his beauty and superiority. We are truly blessed to be witnessing such an amazing athlete and human being in our lifetime. In a way the coronavirus has given us a lot of free time in order to watch Nadal matches nonstop on YouTube. We should take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity because soon enough we will be back to our routine and will become busier.
