Well said. Rafa’s consistency is only matched by his beauty and superiority. We are truly blessed to be witnessing such an amazing athlete and human being in our lifetime. In a way the coronavirus has given us a lot of free time in order to watch Nadal matches nonstop on YouTube. We should take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity because soon enough we will be back to our routine and will become busier.
And yet, life is too short not to mention that such treacly trollishness hits me straight in my gag reflex. I'm sure that Rafa would be horrified at your posts.

@tented: You wondered if we'd ever seen Rafa come back from 1-5 down in a decider, when he beat Medvedev at the YEC last Nov. This isn't exactly the same, but it popped up on youtube. No wonder we remember this as a less-than convincing 3-set win by Nadal. Against The Beautiful Pablo Andújar, in what I think was the 3rd round, RG 2011. Andújar serving at 5-1, 40-0, and Rafa got it all the way back to a TB and won the match in 3.

@Bonaca seems to sneer at Rafa as "Bob the Builder." As if working hard for a living is a bad thing?

Far from that moxie.
Hard work never bad.
This is not what my post about Nadal is about, and you know it.

No, I suppose it's just a cheap attempt at insult. But isn't it about his willingness to work hard when he's in a less-than-advantageous position, which can win him sets and matches that looked lost? If so, what about that is not to be admired? Why is that not a virtue?

This prompted me to remember the 2008 Hamburg final. It’s not the same, since this is the first set, but Federer was up 5-1, 40-30, and Rafa won the set 7-5.

But in the Madrid Open virtual Muzz is the king :astonished-face:. He says that Rafa is less tough there :face-with-tears-of-joy:

Bonaca is completely in love with Djokovic and is blind to everyone else. If Bonaca takes his head out of Djokovic’s *** for only one second he would actually be able to see the huge talent of Nadal as well as other players. But instead he believes that Djokovic is the only tennis player to exist.

If Djokovic does something then it’s because of his talent but if another player does the exact same thing it’s because of luck or whatever excuse. It’s really a very sad and pathetic situation, Bonaca is probably the worst fanboy in all of sports. :negative:  :banghead: :bye:

No it’s not. The whole point isn’t about his fighting spirit. It’s about his playing style, Jesus there is no better example for what I am meaning, than this match on clay from 2009. one player is the talented calm one and the other the groaning bull who seems to suffer of pain every time he hits the ball.
only looking on the game style, how can someone not favour maestro?

You don't like his style? Too much grunting and not especially beautiful? Not sure how that makes you a Djokovic fan, then. Still, what about that makes him "Bob the Builder?" Is it that you need your tennis to look like it doesn't require effort? Why not be a Federer fan, then? It's not figure-skating, and style points are not awarded. I find that a weirdly elitist attitude, particularly coming from a chip-on-the-shoulder Djokovic fan.

No i dont like his style and also his behavior on court. Bob the builder stands for his workinjg style of play, physicality and power- no finesse.
I am a Novak supporter not because of his game style primarly, but also.
You are not a fan because of just one reason.

I like Federers playing style the most , but thats not enough to put him in first place.

What is exactly what you like about Nadal? I guess not his soundmaking and neurotic behavior? So you have your reasons and i have mine.

I wondered if this was a rhetorical question, but I'll answer it anyway. Firstly, I would say if you think Nadal is all power and physicality and no finesse, you have not been watching him play, or you're watching with prejudiced goggles on. He has a fantastic drop shot, both at the net and from far behind it. I'd say it is better than Novak's and comparable with Roger's. His drop shot from the baseline is the best, bar none. He doesn't get enough credit for his soft hands at the net, net play, or his drop shots. That's just true.

Secondly, I don't have a problem with players that make noise when they play. I never have. I think that anyone who has played sports understands that the expulsion of air with noise is helpful to energy and effort. If you don't like it, you can turn the sound down on your TV. As to Nadal's ticks, likewise they have never bothered me. I don't find it "neurotic." I see them as what he uses to focus himself, and let's face it, he's the mentally toughest player out there, no question. People complain that he plays slow, and he does, but I don't think that that kind of mental discipline comes out of nowhere. Great focus takes time.

As to my fandom, no, not for one reason. Primarily, I've always found his game to be thrilling. He hits shots no one else can hit. He bends the ball like no one. And I love the fact that he never gives up on a point, a game or a set. You may find that "workman-like" and denigrate it, but I think it's admirable. One of my favorite quotes about him is from Connors, who was also considered one of the toughest players on tour: he said that "Rafa plays like he's broke." You don't have to admire that, but I do.

First of all , it wasn’t a rhetorical question.

As I thought , you have many reasons for liking him. And some good ones, in my opinion.
His fighting spirit is the best I can see in his game.

Everything else is debatable.
Other things just taste. A main difference in our fandom is, my motivation for rooting for Novak, contains a large portion of patriotism. You don’t show that. I think this I have more in common with Carol. At this level things became faster kind of personal, which is stupid because we are talking about strangers.

Your reasons to like Nadal are completely understandable to me. Honest fans argue like you do.
I like you and respect you very much, not only because of that.

In the bolded above, you got to the crux of the Fedalovic Wars, right there. We will debate their relative strengths and weaknesses forever. To pretend that they're not all 3 exceptionally talented, however, to my mind, is ludicrous. As to taste, that's very much where it shakes out for people, but, as you said before, it's hard to put a finger on why you like one player over another. Which bring us to insult. What is the actual need for it, among fans? It's not really necessary, when debate over merits would suffice, but the internet was built for it. And one fan insults a player and another pays back in kind. What's the point, though, beyond insecurity and hating? I will not pretend to be above a bit of tit-for-tat. But I do question the tennis acumen of anyone who diminishes a great player just to be spiteful and horrible, or to buff up their own player. And there's plenty of that to go around. That is what I find childish and tiresome.

Gee some of these Novak fans have 'short memories' or that have just decided to be a fan recently lol!
Novak when he first came on the tennis scene did not have a great fhand and had to really work on it
His volley's also needed work,I remember he hired Aussie Mark Woodforde,a member of the famous doubles team The Woodies to help him with his volley play and his transition game to the net, over the year's he has hired other people to help him, even with his serve,so he had to work at it,just like other tennis players,he always had a great bhand. Most players especially the top players are always 'tweaking their game'.
Roger Federer has always had the most natural game for tennis, even Roger has tweaked his game over the years.
So I guess we could also call Novak the Builder lol! (BTW this is coming from a Novak Fan)

I absolutely agree moxie!!!!!!!!!
I wrote from the very beginning , there are 3 GOATS, this includes Nadal. I never wrote he is no extraordinary player. I just don’t like him, this fact influences my posts, yes , and the fact what bullshit some of the forum members wrote.
For me there is a big difference to insult a player or a forum member.
The question , what for all of this, everyone must know for themselves.
I live all of my life under the credo: Treat people like you want to be treated , don’t be the aggressor and pay back with the same coin.
I do not differentiate between internet or real life.
You find these things childish and tiresome, when you join this kind of conversation, you are part of it. It’s kind of fun and pastime.
Look how you and I can argue and discuss, despite having largely different tastes and opinions about many things, but we don’t insult each other!!!

That is called : Tolerance!

Many of the others could not or will not do that.
I accept that also, and treat them the same way.
