Thanks Carol I remember that match which went down to the wire, the battle of the 'Pirate Pants' as well.
I'd never seen that one. That was some match! Again, Rafa comes back from the brink. I loved the tiny girl in the purple sundress, suffering and celebrating throughout. She was all of about 6...true fan! :yahoo:

She was delightful, she was crying when Rafa lost the first set,soo passionate for someone soo young.

They were two hours + into it in that TB, too, when she was weeping that Rafa might lose. That's a lot of focus and intensity for a small child. And she was still fully into it at the end of the match. I wonder where she is now, but I bet she's kind of amazing. Anyway, she was the visual "Id" for a lot of us Nadal fans, when he comes back from the edge of defeat. :)

Rafa doubts the tennis year will continue:

"I would sign up right now just to being ready for 2021," Nadal said on Tuesday. "I'm more concerned with the Australian Open than with what happens later this year. I think 2020 has been practically lost. I'm hopeful of being able to start next year."

"Sadly, I'm not going to lie to you, the feeling is that we are losing a year of our lives," Nadal added. "And at 33, 34 years old, that is more valuable than at 20, when you have more time ahead of you."

The Nadal family are truly charismatic, charming and entrancing, definitely the finest family in tennis. We miss you Uncle Toni!

The mental toughness was there from the beginning.....
It was the first time they played professionally, I think. And Rafa was bereft, afterwards, at beating his mentor. But it didn't keep him from beating him. If I can find the presser, It's adorable.

FWIW, I think Rafa enjoying himself, he's got , what , 2 more months before tennis resumes , will refresh him mentally and emotionally. Of course we don't know how he will do, but IMO it's not as easy at his current age for him to enter "Theim Country" ie training in beast mode for long extended periods of time.

Personally, I'm glad he's relaxing and resting, and that he's learned that he's better off not overworking. I still hope he comes to NY, but I won't hold my breath.

One thing that this pandemic allowed Nadal to do is think about life after tennis. I know he still enjoys playing tennis and winning, but deep down he knows his time playing tennis at a very high level is coming to an end. But instead of forcing himself to play or practice a lot, this pandemic allowed him to "enjoy" and relax his life outside of tennis. In a way, this pandemic allowed him to become more human instead of just overworking. It is why he said that he is not thinking about tennis too much at the moment. Now, once the French Open draws closer, he will shift gears but right now he is relaxing and is having fun in own private way. It will be interesting to see if his mind will be 100% on tennis once French Open draws near. He is 34 years old..
