I don’t think he will go out hard to win Madrid.
Rafa has won the event 5 times and he’s been out of tournament play for 6 weeks, missing 2 of his fave red clay tournaments. The crowds will be wildly behind him for every match. Unless Rafa is feeling lingering effects of his injury I have no doubt he will go out hard to win. He knows no other way to play.

Rafa begins his clay season tomorrow. He’s scheduled to be on third, not before 4 PM (local time).

What will you be looking at to gauge how he’s doing? I’m curious about the serve, which seems like the thing most potentially affected by a chest/rib injury.

Agree with your thoughts I also will be looking at Rafa's serve

I heard a commentator say Rafa’s team couldn’t have asked for a better beginning, so things must be going quite well, as 6-1 suggests.

Apparently during the rain delay, Nalbandian told Kecmanovic to hit to Rafa’s BH.

While Nadal might need some matches, he needs to try to finish this match in two sets. No need to play unnecessary three sets.

It doesn’t look as if that will be a problem. He looks great to me. I’m sensing him holding back or hesitating, as some players do when back from an injury.
