I saw that Bencic and Kirilenko withdrew from their doubles match today. Any word on who was injured, if it is Maria again, that spells trouble. She did win her 1st round match.

It seems to be so!

Look at the doubles draw, down there in the box for retirements:

B. Bencic / M. Kirilenko - M. Kirilenko (Left wrist injury)

Thanks very much Kiu:clap Maria continues to really struggle with injuries, at least it is not a leg or knee, but nevertheless, she seems to becoming more and more prone to the injury bug. Dropping down the rankings from the top ten level she was at around this time last year.

Maria holds and then breaks. McHale blinks. Back on serve in the decider. 4-3

Maria levels 4-4. Now we enter Sudden Death as it starts to drizzle.

Yes K, she went on a tear and McHale went to sleep.
Masha takes 4 games in a row and will now serve for the match.

Genie/Aga playing a first set breaker.

Missed you KS...sorry about your Bulls...they played kinda poorly:(

Thanks GG. It was an expected outcome. I never had them getting out of the 1st round. Visit the NBA playoff thread sometime.

Has anyone noticed that women get no byes in Madrid and the men get 8? I'm not clear why that makes sense in a combined event.

It gets worse! Only top 4 seeds in the WTA doubles draw get first round bye. However ATP has bye for top 8 seeds in doubles.
It may have to do with scheduling something this size.

It's nothing like this. There is an idea that premier mandatories are meant to have no byes. Maybe that's what is meant to make them feel bigger than premier 5s, I don't know.

Of course in practice Madrid is the only one with no byes. Because both Indian Wells and Miami are 2 week events with 96 draws (thus 32 byes). And Beijing gives out 4 performance byes to the semi-finalists of Tokyo in previous years (now Wuhan from this year), because otherwise the schedule would be brutal.

ATP just operate on a different system where all there masters series events give 8 byes. The obvious main reason for the byes is because a lot of them are back to back and they don't want the players to withdraw from the second event.

Interesting doubles match tomorrow

Sveta/Sam v Sara/Roberta

In the singles....Sveta plays Aga

Sveta should win as long as she keeps her patience and dosent go on a 'mental holiday' she is a better clay court play than Aga.
