My questions marks with Li and Halep over their injury concerns have been answered with their first rd wins today.Hoping they both continue forward. My bracket has been stuffed up with Kerber having to retire yesterday with a lower back injury...hoping she can recover asap.Kerber has had back problems in the past.

Wouldn't pay much attention to the h2h as that's screwed bets up for me in the past. Going by form Cibulkova is in far better form.
Front,
you should have made the bet, not only Samantha beat Domi in straights, she punished her with a six love second set score.

I think this is the only upset of the day.

Not really the upset of the day? if you look at thier h2h....Domi hasnt taken a set off Stosur....thats why I picked Stosur to win....with reservations:) Yay Sammy..............Oi,Oi,Oi,.........

I know it wasn't but on paper it was. Domi was seeded 9 but Slamin' Sammy is not even seeded here.

First round is just about complete, soon we'll have 32 left.

The reason I picked Stosur is because she hits with lots of spin. A short person would be troubled by balls that kick up so high. If Stosur beats Muguruza, she will fall to Pova who is a tiny bit taller than
Domi. :)

Hoping for a Li v Pova match.

Glad to see most of the seeds surviving. Can Kuzy make it to the quarters? She has a great game when on.

One just has to look at Stosur's h2h against Sharapova......enough said:)
Also it would not surprise me in the least if Stosur loses her next match.

1) Me too, I picked that in my draw.

2) I like Kuzy's chances here, she has been on a roll(made it to finals in Portugal last week), she is also playing doubles with Sam, they dominated today...

I glanced at tomorrows matches. It gets more interesting.

YES!!

This is good for Sabine, she is playing every day, keeps her in form. She needs to tune her game on clay.

Oh ya, remember the great run she had at RG some years ago when she finally lost to
Francesca Schiavone. Plus her kick serve really works on clay against most opponents.
That kind of serve is a huge advantage, especially in WTA where most players have
trouble holding serve.

Sam has good game and skills; if only she had some grey matter also, she would have
easily won 5 to 8 slams by now. :snigger

Please don't remind me of that GS final match between Sam and Fran at RG.I was there live by the way....Sam played good clay court tennis to get to that final....again her Head got in the way!!!!!!
Anyway I was pleased with the result....Fran deserved her win that day.

I saw that Bencic and Kirilenko withdrew from their doubles match today. Any word on who was injured, if it is Maria again, that spells trouble. She did win her 1st round match.

Congrats Caroline for your 7th win over Makarova - solid play, good serves, good net play and you searched the lines. :clap

Caro isn't my #1, but I do agree with you. She was super-aggressive and her shots were landing very deep and on the lines. I want her to play like this all the time.

Has anyone noticed that women get no byes in Madrid and the men get 8? I'm not clear why that makes sense in a combined event.

It gets worse! Only top 4 seeds in the WTA doubles draw get first round bye. However ATP has bye for top 8 seeds in doubles.
It may have to do with scheduling something this size.
