RE: Breaking news: Juan Martin del Potro surgery will sideline him for rest of season

I found an article in Canchallena (Argentine) also from today, which shows a photo of Juan Martín with his doctor…and not strapping on his left wrist. In this one, the discuss that the wrist is healing well and on schedule, and that perhaps JMDP could come back before the end of the year. This is a more cautious prediction.

While I admire his desire to get back so soon, imo coming back in August would be career suicide. Tomic came back way too soon after bilateral hip surgery and ate a double bagel. Bad losses wouldn't be the issue. The main thing is August is way too soon imo and he'd risk very much damaging his wrist badly by returning so soon. I'd aim for the Asian swing and the latest part of it if he wanted to try for some play at the end of the year. It's a surface he's very good at too.

yes I suppose august is just a sort of general date to aim for. not defo..just see how recovery goes.

His legs are fine, his right arm is fine. There is little reason that he can not be out there right now doing what it takes to stay physically fit and come back as soon as possible. He has had the experience of recovering from the right wrist, which should aid him. In this case, he has an advantage; he's right handed and he doesn't even have to hit 2 handed backhands until the left arm is ready.

The only real risk is if he were to fall down or something and re-injure his left arm, or put too much stress on the left wrist before it is ready.

I'm sure his doctors have told him all of this and more.

The only thing I've heard is that he is contracted to defend his title in Basel Oct 20, via Federer's contract with the Swiss Indoors tournament run by Roger Brennwald. So he probably has a bit of leeway when and if he returns prior to that. In 2010, after not playing since the AO, he did return to play at the end of the year, but barely, losing in the first round of his only 2 tournaments entered.

As of now, there is a strong field scheduled at the Swiss Indoors 500, with #1 Nadal, #3 Wawrinka, #4 Federer, #7 Del Potro, #9 Raonic, and #16 Dimitrov on the player entry list for Basel. As mentioned, Del Potro is contracted to play but obviously his recovery comes first. #8 Andy Murray isn't confirmed yet, but Basel is on his schedule and I wouldn't be surprised if he plays this time after withdrawing the last couple of years. #6 Berdych and #13 Nishikori are other possibles.

Respectfully,
masterclass

That doesn't seem like a possibility. At least I can't think of another example of a player with a two-handed BH switching to one hand because of an injury.

:) Uhh, I meant only temporarily and only in practice. He can get out on the court, practice, get fit, and hit all the forehands he wants, and he can even hit the one handed backhand slice, which he already has in his repertoire, while his left arm/wrist is still in the rehab stage. Once his left arm is ready, he can try the two hander. In the meantime, he puts himself in the position to be better conditioned, and not to lose much with the rest of his game. Where there is a will, there is a way.

Different circumstances, but did you ever see what Thomas Muster went through in rehab after the car accident that left his left leg in a cast from toe to thigh?

Good to see that video of him hitting some balls the other day. He's such a likeable guy, a bit like Tsonga but more introverted, can't help but support him when I see him play. His Wimbledon semi-final with Djokovic last year was probably the best tennis match I've ever watched.

Would be nice to see him play alright but is it wise? Not so sure. Not exactly match tough for that kind of intensity! Still has another month of recovery time yet though.

Why someone who has been off this long would decide to make their comeback at a best-of-five set tournament is beyond me.

I think he could win a match or three..i mean he has been hitting in practise for a few weeks already and now he has a month to see if he improves enough now he started on his 2hbh rehab.

his rank would be high so he won't face anyone too scary (hopefully)..if he got to even round 3 it would be good for him.

no silly risks though with his injury so lets see what happens..good chance he won't play uso but if he is fit I think he should play.
