Yup. That's very handy for him and will make things a lot easier when he comes back.

Last time, he took almost three years to come back to form and fitness after right
wrist surgery. If he takes another three years after left wrist surgery, his career would
be essentially over. Also, if he is going to take that long to come back, the protected
ranking will not be of much use. Remember, last time he plummeted in rankings
and then he rose back.

with such bad injuries Delpo is really good about it, certainly not considered a whiner... you never feel that he would use it as excuse after a loss, yet it's obvious how much it hampered him.

this is diabolical news though, isn't it ?.. :puzzled :(

is the 8 months off accurate , last time his serving wrist op was may 4th..was back for 2 Asian swing tourneys in October..5 months, maybe its just wild speculation in the media (wouldn't be the first time), op on Monday i think so i won't be convinced of 8months until del potro/his team/surgeon give some specific info.

One difference would be, I think, that last time, Juan Martín tried to come back only 3 months after surgery, practicing in order to play the USO, which he couldn't do, but may never have taken the protected ranking. (I don't know if I can confirm that. Will dig around.) But if that is so, then that would be why his ranking plummeted, and hopefully that doesn't have to happen this time.

Also, last time, Del Potro admits to having been very depressed during his injury break, to the point where he couldn't even do other strength training. I hope he has learned from his past experience, most especially that he CAN come back to a high level, and so won't make all of the same mistakes, or suffer from the same despair. Best of luck, Juan Martín!

From Del Potro's facebook page.

Dear friends,

I want to tell you that after a period of medical treatment, in which we tried to be competitive on a tennis court, and following new examinations done today, my doctor Richard Berger decided that I should have surgery to fix the problem on my left wrist. It will be tomorrow, Monday, March 24th.

Obviously, it's not the easiest choice or the happiest moment of my career. I experienced a similar situation and I know how hard it is to be out of the tour, the desire to return, the endless weeks of recovery and how difficult it is to start fighting for the top spots in the rankings again.

As always, thank you to those who express their support in any part of Argentina and the world, during tournaments, on the streets or social networks. The strength you send me and my desire will be crucial during my recovery.

Thank you very much to all,
Juan Martin

^ I'm taking him at his word and have posted encouragement to his FB page. I would urge others to do that as well, or to his homepage. He's got a long recuperation in front of him, and needs all the well-wishing he can get.

But, apparently they found more damage than expected from previously taken images.
The doc says with that much damage, it is surprising that he was even able to play.
Got to wait and see.

So Argie press was right when they announced it last friday. Poor Juan, his body is so damned fragile
Wish him a fast recovery. We miss you Juan

FYI..pics posted of Juan in his hospital gown in bed post surgery. Smiling and happy with Franco Davin and the Docs.

Seems it was a success and prognosis is for faster recovery than initially thought. Great news all around.

the doc obviously is not a tennis player..Del Po was slicing 90% of his backhands and trying to hit as many forehands as possible. We should be reminded he got to the final at IW doing so, and almost won it!

He has only been prevented from hitting one shot in his arsenal, the two hander.

I doubt he hit 90% of his backhand with the slice (that's 9 out of 10 backhands). I'm pretty sure the number is substantially lower. But yes, he did have to use his slice backhand more.

However, acting like the two hander is the only shot that was hampered by the wrist injury is misguided. At least with the two hander, he can use two hands for back-up. I'm pretty sure hitting forehands wasn't too much fun, especially with how big he hits it, except that he didn't have much of a choice from that side. In fact, it was pretty obvious that his rally forehand suffered tremendously for years and hasn't been quite as devastating as it normally is.

Uh..I think you are misinformed? The problem is with the LEFT wrist. That is where he had the surgical repair.

There are many reasons to like JMDP, but one of them is his commitment to Davin (who has been paid even during the extended periods of not playing), and vice versa.

Great news, indeed. Perhaps he'll be back by the fall Masters events. At least Paris/Bercy. (Then Isabelle could see him!)

I am well aware, and maybe I should have articulated this better:

His forehand (especially rally forehand) hasn't been the same since the RIGHT wrist surgery he had in 2010.

It's actually quite astonishing that he's now had surgery on both wrists.

Hmm i am not sure if agree. Maybe others can chime in. I think his forehand came to full force after the surgery.

Yeah his FH has been fine since the right wrist surgery which is why it's strange he waited so long before the left one was operated on. The commentators said his left wrist surgery went very well yesterday so I hope he has a speedy recovery.
