He's going to be like Connors where we'll have to drag his arse off the court! When's enough enough with these guys; $$, fame, adulation? :fearful-face:

Essentially, their entire lives have been tennis 24/7. It’s all they know, it’s all they’ve done, it’s all they still do. If they quit, then what? I think that’s part of it.

Brutal draw for Fed in Halle (except in the opening round).

1st round - Qualifier or lucky loser
2nd round - FAA (winner or finalist of stuttgart grass tourney this week)
QF - Med
SF - Sasha
F - Tits

It is unlikely that Fed will lift the trophy. Hope, he gets enough match practice at least.

It had to happen sooner or later! The days of "cakewalks" thru draws; esp. at these made for Fed exhibition tourneys are over! That draw is more than brutal, it's Karma! :face-with-tears-of-joy:

Maybe he might not even win the first round. Have a feeling first round might end up being Kohlschreiber who is no slouch.

Shocking! No one's around commenting on Fed's match vs FAA! The GOAT is being made to look like a goat! He's being schooled; BIG TIME!
Maybe emotionally shocking but not logically.

He's almost 40 coming off two knee surgeries and has had barely any matches. As depressing as it was to see Roger at a level much lower than he was before, as long as he doesn't re-injure himself next season he may do alot better. Obviously we have to be realistic for his chances at Wimbledon this year but doing well or not it's good to see him back.

He still has a long way to go in every faucet of the game, from returning, ground strokes etc.

It is a Wednesday morning, so a lot of people are working.

What is there to say really? In his head Fed thinks he can still compete! I think he's playing as well as he can, but the pace of shot and his need to "get on a horse" to run down these bullet shots has to be daunting! He looked amateurish and totally out of his depths by the end of that match against FAA! Federer looked down and appeared to be ashamed of himself! I could be reading more into it than him, but I'd feel that way! I think winning a challenger event will be just as daunting if he catches the wrong pro! Felix wasn't in awe and wasn't doing anything outside of playing good, solid tennis! He dismissed Roger's serve with distain by the 2nd set!

I dont give him much chance at Wimbledon and I sense that there will be retire mention when he drops out. Just being super objective about his current form, that's it. 15 break points given in best of 2 sets match is horrible for his standards no matter the knee/age/whatever. You don't need to be young to still serve well

Federer served well at RG. They all have off days and Djokovic fans should know this as Nadal served like crap against Djokovic in their RG semi which contributed greatly to the win for Novak. Federer should be more concerned with the 25 unforced errors in 2 sets.

At this point Roger odds to win Wimbledon should be somewhere close to Ivanisevic in 2001. Miracle needs to happen.
The ''only'' difference is Federer is 40 years old compared to Goran who was 30 and the grass is played much slower these days.

Honestly, if it wasn't for the 2 knee surgeries, it wouldn't take a miracle, just a very good performance. Nadal isn't playing, Murray is a shadow of his former self and let's say a big server took out Djokovic. Even if a big server didn't take out Djokovic, Federer had 2 match points against him in 2019. The hampered movement and lack of match toughness is his problem now more than age. There are a lot of guys who will trouble him now this year because of the bolded part.

I'm glad you found this press conference. I referred to it in the other thread. It's very interesting. Roger is very forthcoming about what the comeback takes, and why comeback from injury is difficult, and a process.

I hope Roger is both allowed and chooses to play in Olympics. This will be his last chance.

He should enter in singles and in mixed doubles with #10 Bencic. There is no need to play in Men's doubles in which he already has gold.

It is unlikely that he will be able to win Gold in Olympics (and any other medal does not mean anything for him). But, you never know. If you are not in it, you are not going to win it. Lot of players are skipping including some big name players. Novak is vulnerable in three set matches as he does not have enough time to wake up from his walkabouts. So, there is the possibility of Novak getting upset before the finals (which will be a five set match).

At any rate, the trip will not be wasted. With both Roger and Belinda being top 10 players, their pairing should be one of the top contenders for a medal.

I hope Roger plays in Washington D.C. 500 and Cincinnati as prep for USO.

Playing back to back Masters in Toronto and Cincy will be tiring and so he should skip Toronto and play Cincy instead where he is more successful.

It is possible that he may go out early and if so, he will not get enough match practice before USO. So, in order to hedge for that, he should play one more tourney. There is no point playing in Winston Salem in the week before USO. So, he should choose to play in Washington DC 500 tourney which is in the week before Toronto.

This way his post Wimbledon schedule will be like below with a week of rest after each tourney.

  • Olympics
  • Washington D.C. 500
  • Cincy 1000
  • USO

I am very curious as to why you would push the Olympics for Roger this year. I didn't think you were in the camp of those that considers singles Gold more than a bauble, but I could be wrong. In any case, Roger has been pretty clear that his ambition for the Olympics was to take his kids and give them the experience. Because of Vica in Brazil, and Covid in Tokyo this year, that was/is not an option. Which is sad, because I know he really wanted that, and they are at a good age now.

Do you think the chance of singles Gold is worth the trip? It will likely cut into the No. Am. HC swing. Also, while I would have said that Djokovic would go, given that he has cited it as a goal, he's likely to give up on it, IMO, esp. if he wins Wimbledon. He's already got enough argument without the bonus Golden Career Slam, don't you think?

So you really think Roger should go to Tokyo?

There are five weeks gap between end of Olympics and beginning of USO. Plenty of time.
Fine, but what about why you really want him to do it? Big prize? He can't take his family.
