Usually getting a knee arthroscopic procedure is maybe a two month recovery but to be gone almost 5 months is a bit concerning. Will he get a protective ranking because he has a ton of points to defend if I recall correctly.

You have been here long enough to know this.

Even if one applies for PR and is approved, PR can only get you entry into the tournaments and cannot get you seeding.

This is a bummer. But, if he can win three GSs in a period 1.5 years when he comes back (like he did last time), I will take it.

Last time was Methuselah’s back, wasn’t it?

The difference is he’s 3 1/2 years older, 38 years old, however only a drooling idiot would automatically count him out.

The pollyanna view is that this is a blessing in disguise: he is forced to skip clay, and has a chance to recharge like he did back in 2016 before he won the 2017 AO.

My sense is that this is a true watershed moment for Roger. He's either going to come back refreshed and play on for another two or three years, or age is finally going to catch up and he's going to be a diminished version, which would likely mean retirement in 2021, if not at the end of this year.

No a blessing in disguise this time..Novak and Rafa are still in their prime, or slightly passed their prime. Otherwise I agree with it's either going to be Feast or Fathom for Roger.

You are right that only a drooling idiot would automatically count him out because he has been a heck of a player. At 38, recovery will not be as quick as it was 4 years ago.

People will never understand what prime means. Yes, they're still winning, and, at least for Novak, will continue to do so for a while. But if you really think this is their prime you know less about tennis than I thought, which is saying a lot. Compare this Novak to 2011 or 2015 Novak and tell me how this is his prime please.

Everyone has been asking things like, "why so long after arthroscopic surgery?" etc., and I was wondering if it wasn't so much as "forced" to skip clay as made the choice not to come back from knee surgery on clay, which he has said in the past referring to the other knee, that it made it feel funny. And more rest, more recovery. Plus, he's skipped clay before and it worked out once for him.

Re: protected ranking someone else mentioned above: I think you have to be out for more than 6 months to get a PR. Could be wrong.

Very bad news . His Body is 4y older since his last surgery. Even if he plays Wimbledon, he will most likely be no factor for winning it.
That means until Roland Garros Thiem will very likely become no 3 seed.
always No 2 and 3 in the same half?

It will be worse than that for Federer. He’ll go below Top 4. He has 3,180 points to defend between now and Halle. Since he won’t be defending them, he’ll drop from 7,180 to 3,950 upon his return. If he had that many points today, he would be ranked no. 7. If he can stay in the top 8, that will help a lot in terms of draws.

I guess Federer doesn’t want to be on the tour when Nadal wins #20. I understand.

To me 2011 (24yo) Djoker edges 2015 version (28yo), but a 32yo at his peak? only AP thinks that.

He said prime not peak. Is it necessary to explain the difference to you genius?

Fed was afraid of losing to Ralph at RG and so he injured himself and had this surgery.

Federer is not really having a surgery, he just doesn’t want to be on tour while Nadal surpasses him. If Nadal wins number 20 at RG believe me Federer will not even come back. In the meantime it was either pretending to have a surgery and watch from the sidelines or retiring all together. He obviously chose the first option in case Nadal falters.

If you think that the king of ego Federer would allow a situation of someone equaling/passing him while he’s still playing, then you are dreaming. For someone with his personality and ego it will be a big embarrassment no matter what he has said to the media in the past. I have to say that Pete Sampras had it much easier. Lol

The biggest embarrassment here is actually you and it's not even close.

Everyone keeps telling you to stop responding to these trolls, and you won't listen! There is not a sane person on these forums that thinks that claptrap makes any sense. Don't feed the troll!

I’ve said it over and over that Federer won’t be playing when Nadal equals and passes him, and here is RG 2020 and just like magic Federer disappears. I was right.
