thanks Moxie, I actually did look up and they are right, infact I thought it was the first time

As good as Verdasco can be, his nerves gets the best of him when going up against the "Big 3!" It's a serious problem across the ranks, but more so with a talent like Verdasco who finds a way to blow matches against them with multiple match points! The whole lot of the Spanish DC team have the same mental deficiency who have it all, but have few wins over the elites; esp. Nadal! It's sad to see year in and year out with only a few upsets over the seasons at smaller events! :nono:  :banghead: :cuckoo:

While I agree that Verdasco has had a head problem throughout his career, and big consistency issues, that wasn't really the case today. He never led in that match. He was the better player to win the 2nd set (in part because Fed's level dropped, too,) but that just pulled him even, and he served 2nd in the 3rd. He never played his flashiest tennis today, that I saw, and the better player prevailed in the end.

Surely, the rest of the Spanish Armada doesn't really "have it all." Only Nadal does. But I'm pretty sure you'd find that the French players, while also having a lot of depth in the field haven't done that well v. Nadal, or the rest of the big 3 either, for that matter. It's really the same problem that the rest of the field has had for many years now v. the very elite: talent gap.

I am concerned Stefanos is playing too much. I hope he comes to his senses and does not turn into a another Thiem.

Tsitsipas served for the match, got broken, went to a tiebreak, and lost it 7-1.

Tsitsipas -Hurkacz is an outstanding match 1 set all.
Hurkacz will definitely break through this year. He has a good game, not just serve.

I noticed in the doubles, Federer’s first two opponents — Kohlschreiber & Verdasco — are playing doubles.

EDIT: They just lost to qualifiers.

Fucsovics was recognized as a “dangerous floater” a year or two ago. But Roger should be beating these guys far more easily...it is concerning that every match is either three sets or involves tiebreaks. Clearly he’s not (yet?) at his level.

This is the new Roger, I am afraid. He now has to work much harder to win matches that look easier on paper.

I think (at least that is how I came to know of him) Fucs came into prominence when he face Roger at a slam recently (sometime in the last couple of years or so) and gave Roger a much tougher fight than expected. May be there are some match up issues here.

I think this might be it for Roger as Coric knows how to play him and Roger is too inconsistent right now. He can step it up of course but who knows...

I beg to differ. Roger had some rust after a month's rest. But, he is slowly picking up steam. After two three set wins, he has finished the job in two sets today even though one involved a TB. Fed knows Coric needs to be treated with respect and so it is not a banana skin. Fed will win in two sets and without a TB. This is what elite players do, stepping it up when it comes to business end.

I too view the Coric-Fed match as a tough one for the Swiss Maestr. He has to clean the game up and hit out early to get ahead. I tend to believe he will and that this is over in straights. I think he really wants to win this event again.
