My gut feeling is he will probably shut down his season even if he does not require shoulder surgery. And if he does that, I am 100% behind his decision. As you get older, your body takes a lot longer to recover from injuries so it is important for Djokovic to truly prepare his body for the 2020 season. He does not want to risk further injury on his shoulder and his whole body. Man, I do wonder on how did he get his shoulder injury in the 1st place? Mind you guys in Cincy it was his right elbow/forearm not the left shoulder.

It did seem odd that he was having issues with the right elbow in Cincy, but it ended up being the left shoulder that took him out of the USO. But when you favor one thing, you can end up injuring another. (Total speculation, obviously.) It remains to be seen if Novak needs to shut down his season for this, however, other than the #1, he has basically nothing to play for that he hasn't already won, and so he may take the decision to rest the body and protect his AO.

Djokovic should call Nadal and ask him his opinion since Nadal has had 10 times more injuries during his career and could give him good advice on what to do.

Wait, is the news confirmed or just a rumor? (I’m talking about the surgery) If it is true, wow that’s a HUGE news. Also, if he does follow through the surgery, he might not play the 2020 Australian Open. I hope there’s no surgery because that will be a bummer for him and his fans!
Not confirmed, think it’s more than a rumour, at least for closing the season.
This is catastrophal anyway you look at it as a fan.
He would be no factor for AO and FO 2020, with surgery this could be much longer.

The left shoulder was also in cincy an issue.

That does not sound too good. Where did you get the news from?

It was obvious in the match against Londero that he was in pain; you could tell by his facial expression when playing BH right before the massage. I suppose the people who accused him of faking the injury did not see that match.
Mostly from Serbian press, I made the experience in the past it’s the most reliable. He always talks a bit more free to his home press. Interviews also.
Big bullshit , it’s really disappointing.

Is it a minor surgery or a major surgery? I think he will be fine if he just needs rest and more treatment. He just need to close his 2019 season. But if there is some type of surgery involve, it might take him a while to recover (in terms proper tennis fitness).

No details about the injury, he is in the same swiss clinic as for the elbow.
Yes he will need time to reach proper fitness and roll into form.

If it is a major thing he could end up like Sir Andy:facepalm:.

It is what it is.

Like I said above, I have a feeling that it will probably just need more rest and treatment. If there's surgery involved in his shoulder, then it will probably be just a minor procedure (hopefully!).

It is unfortunate for him to get this injury especially after winning two slams this year AND winning a 5th set Wimbledon final against Federer too.

He should talk to Meldopova, who had shoulder injury (is it more than once).

Her serve was never the same again.

I have a feeling he will shut down this season and try to get ready for AO 20. It could involve surgery too. He might go again trough the same process in his last comeback, but this time he should be wiser and do what's needed right now.

It looks like Carol posted the news on the general news thread but I will post it here because it does relate to Djokovic.

It looks like Djokovic would not need surgery on his shoulder so that's good news for him and his fans! He will try to rehab his shoulder so he can Tokyo Open in three weeks.

The only nuance about his decision is that let's hope he does not re-aggravate his shoulder injury or any part of his body. He does not want to make what Nadal did in 2014 in which he came back from wrist injury and got appendicitis and played through the appendicitis. The last thing he wants is to go 2020 AO less than 100% fit.

Hopefully he is really ok, otherwise it’s the biggest mistake of all.

Yes, but don't you kind of feel like this is all still really TBD, as he goes along resting and recovering? Obviously, he saw a specialist in Switzerland, and they feel good about rehabbing without surgery, and wanted to let the fans know something before too many rumors flew. But I seriously think that he'll know that what he most wants to protect is his AO chances, so his end-of-season schedule may be a work in progress. He only has his #1 to protect going forward, and I bet he'll have his priorities straight.

For me it’s kind of dejavu when remembering his elbow problems. He waited too long and lost so much time until he did the best with the surgery.
I hope he gets better advise this time.
