Serena comes through over Piro (the grass court specialist) 6-2 6-3. She played better today, but still a little inconsistent on the groundies.

I think once she plays the higher ranked opponents, the groundies will improve. I believe, like Cincinnati, she does like playing the Asian swing, especially as it's at the end of the seasin.

Kvitova better get those Asian sponsors...she had a platform yesterday as Na li s friend to appeal to that 1 billion population..she is very boring though.

I heard Patrick is on his way to Beijing because he feels Serena needs him there.

I would agree with him. Yesterday she seemed really emotional and unsure of herself.
Patrick will be there for Patrick....he likes the attention that comes with Serena a bit too much.I hope Serena reminds him that she is the star not him...;)

And you know this how? crystal ball? intuiting it through the small prism of a tv/monitor? Armed with similar level of "knowledge", I could just as easily hazard a guess that Serena asked him to come to Beijing for reasons which she need not explain to any of us looking on from a distance of many, many miles :)

Really? nothing changed then from last year when she was simply depressed in Beijing.
Couldnt they predict it in advance? I thought her camp knows what its doing.
My guess: Serena called him and told him to come and help her. She has enough cash to pay for the extra flight ;)

I see while I was slumbering, Venus came through in straights. Tomorrow we'll have the rematch of CSN/Masha from the summer HC. CSN sent Maria home last time, can she duplicate that effort? I'm thinking not this time. Maria in straights.

Yes, CSN can. :D You underestimate CSN to predict straight sets and she can win again.
CSN is not the excited emotional type like Simona. She has no problem to shut up screamer again :)
I dont predict a CSN win, I just dont know.
If boom boom beat today the Wuhan finalist then anything can happen.

as long time Serena fans we are in the know about Patrick love of attention...How many coaches avail themselves to the media the way he does..discretion doesnt exist in his vocabularly.I am sure Richard and Oracene are seething everytime he is front and center about Serena....as insiders we also know that they call him tupac on the low.
Patrick knows that China has a big tennis hungry population and is going there for himself and his academy...

According to my maths, someone can correct me if I am wrong here.

Neither Simona or Petra can catch Serena,if she loses early in Beijing and YEC.The only person that can finish as No 1,other than Serena is Maria who has no points to defend, but she has to win Beijing and YEC,Serena has to lose early in both for that to happen.
If Serena wins Beijing, she will clinch year No 1 immediately.

I think you are wrong. Serena has 2000 points more then Petra. If Serena loses early in both then Petra can surpass her. She can have 1000 points for Beijing and 1500 points for YEC. Apart from that Petra is scheduled to play Moscow which is another 470 points. She can gain almost 3000 points. Even if you won't count her 100 points for Eastboune and 105 points for Montreal it's still 2765 points.

That's of course theory. Serena will not loose everything and Petra will not win everything.

Hmm I will redo my maths...your talking theory...regarding the no 1 spot for the year
I still maintain that if Serena wins Beijing she will clinch the no 1 position for the year.
I will get back to you,it is too late for me to re do maths at the moment

Yes that's correct. If Serena wins Beijing she will gain at least another 350 point to Masha and would lead by 1602 points. That is unsurmountable in YEC. Masha would have to receive a WC in another tourney to be able to beat her.

I went on the current ranking points Serena has 9430 and Petra has 5926.Serena has 3504 more points than Petra. If your remove their Beijing points (1000) for Serena and (450) for Petra,Serena has 2954 more points than Petra. If Petra wins Beijing, she cant have 1000 points cause she is defending 450 points,so she can only gain 550 points. If Petra wins YEC,she cant have 1500 points, she is defending 530 points,so if she wins without dropping a match, she gets 970 points. If Serena loses all her round robin matches at the YEC,she still gets 210 points for playing (70 points per match),so hypothetically, she will end the year with 7140 points.

Petra has to win Bejing and YEC without dropping a match to get to No 1.If she wants a cushion for any match dropped in YEC,than she has to win Moscow to get to No 1.If Petra wins Moscow, she will drop points from other Premier level tournaments she played this year,so even the maths that I have done here wont be correct. This is unlikely to happen, but hypothetically, she can clinch No 1.Also I havent taken into account of points that will drop off Petra's ranking total because she has played 17 tournaments so far this year and if you add Beijing,Moscow and YEC this is 20 tournaments, only 16 will count.

Serena all her tournaments this year will count except Wuhan. She got 0 points for IW.Serena has played 14 tournaments so far so will finish with 16,play IW 17,Only Wuhan wont count. The remaining 16 will.

Serena will clinch the No 1 if she wins Beijing and that isnt a hypothetical fact at all.Your post was made on a lot of hypothetical assumptions regarding Petra.I have outlined the possibilities, though in reality I really cant see Petra based on what she has to achieve to get the No 1 position for this year.

BTW I would be surprised if Petra plays Moscow this year, going on her pre match interview at Beijing, she said she was tired.Petra has qualified for the YEC.I would suggest she skips Moscow, rests, then play the YEC.

I really don't understand some Serena fans aversion to Patrick. Sure he talks to the media, but who cares he only talks about her tennis and not her personal business. If Serena cared, he would either have stopped talking or no longer be employed by her. Patrick has brought a lot of good things to her tennis in terms of consistency and focus. I think he has earned the right to discuss things if he wants to with the media. It isn't like what he tells the media is anything revealing. I mean what could he possibly tell the media about her tennis that we don't already know in the years we have watched her play? It isn't like the players are going to be shocked by anything he has to say concerning her tennis as they already know what to expect from her tennis. Well of course he is going there for himself too because when Serena is successful it means he is successful, duh tossip. He also knows she was not looking good in Wuhan and probably needs the extra motivation to end the year strong to start her slam campaign off strong for next year which both have been open about focusing on the slams next year. Again, I end it with if Serena doesn't care that he talks to the media then why should her fans care?

Lots of good doubles action on Moon court.
Simo gets a shot at Mugu, or is it the other way around?
Hingis in action and lots more.

The singles matches are nothing to sneeze at either, it'll only get better.

...:clap...this sounds good but an employee should learn not to talk about the boss to anyone who can listen...calling himself mastermind and all the egocentric titles he gives himself. The Williams family had a wall around them for a long time and Patrick came in and started disclosing a lot of things that should have been kept within the team.Sasha and Esther never talk about Serena to the media the way Patrick does and they have been there longer.Serena has been a champion before Patrick and will be a champion when he is gone which should be soon as after Yec..Serena should start afresh and maybe she will win AO15...

Order of play Wednesday, October 01, 2014 - WTA only - times estimated

A day where more players can be on the way to Singapore. Lots of good matches and 8 matches televised. Will be interesting to see if Kuznetsova is on the way back. Caroline can get a big step closer to YEC and how about Carla against Maria not bad either. So grab a sixpack and be ready for some action. Playing under roof on CC.

VERY chilly today 13 c and misty - 17m/h wind - humidity 75% - raining so no matches outside.

Agree regarding good doubles action.I am a big fan of doubles.
Biggest shock of the doubles compeitition so far was the No 3 seeds Peschke/Srebotnik being defeated by Gajdosova/Tomljanovic.
