Here's a blast from the past: Verdasco just beat Basilashvili in straights in Sofia. (Another one: Gulbis lost in the first round of qualifying there the other day.)

Gulbis is still playing while getting bankroll by Daddy Warbucks.. WOW.. Ernie's game was technically unorthodox but he could be dangerous for a minute.

I had no idea these tournaments even existed before I heard Novak plays Tel Aviv :D Just to be clear Tel Aviv is 250 and Astana is 500? Novak will be aiming for the last 8 spot if he plays a lot in a next month and gets good results.
As someone who won a major this year, he gets into the World Tour Final no matter what.

Thanks for clarification, I did not have a slightest idea.

The criteria to qualify for the ATP Finals are as follows:
  1. Players who finish the season ranked in the top 7 automatically qualify.
  2. The eighth spot is reserved for a player who won a Grand Slam event in the current year and is ranked from 8th–20th.
  3. If more than one player won a Grand Slam event in the current year and is ranked from 8th–20th, then whichever of these players is highest-ranked is awarded the eighth spot; whichever of these players is second highest-ranked is made first alternate.
  4. If there is no player who won a Grand Slam event in the current year and is ranked from 8th–20th, then the eight spot is awarded to the player ranked eighth, irrespective of Grand Slam results.

Interesting, I don’t think WTA has that rule so Rybakina will not qualify if she ends up top 20 in the race

I think I heard he has to be ranked in the top 20 to qualify for the YEC! He's #15 at the moment so he's having to "slum it" in a 250 event! :face-with-hand-over-mouth: :astonished-face:

He probably also wants to play some tennis.
Margaret told me he was playing the tournament because his friend Jonathan Erlich who is 45 :astonished-face: is retiring after this event. They entered the double's draw together but their opponents got a walkover, so not sure why they didn't play?

I definitely need Casper to focus and take the Paris Masters or the ATP Finals. I would say grabbing a big title before this year is over is crucial to the start of next year.

This should be a very highly contested Masters & YEC when normally players are breaking down or just plain tired! Novak will go in fresher than ever since he hasn't played much in the last 3 months! Nadal will probably be the only one who doesn't show up as he's never come close to winning either! Rafa's best chance to take Paris Indoor was back in '07 where everyone upset including Roger by Nalbandien! Murray & Djokovic were barely a blip on the ATG list! Update: Novak is giving no quarter in Tel Aviv! He's smoking Andujar in the 2nd Rd. like a blunt, not allowing the guy a game so far! :shushing-face: :face-with-hand-over-mouth:  :fearful-face:

Erlich could not play due to injury.

And in another throwback, Vasek Pospisil is playing Novak right now. Pospisil has never even taken a set off of Djokovic, and it doesn't look like he'll take this first one, in the TB, either.

Other people having problems with the site??! Been well over a week and it's still dragging rather slowly; erroring out as if running out of RAM! Anyway; the matches were good today! Rune took out Sinner in Sofia to make the final and Djokovic will meet Cilic in the final of Tel Aviv after defeating some guy I never heard of; Roman Safiullin! :shushing-face: :face-with-hand-over-mouth::fearful-face::face-with-tears-of-joy:

I'm not having problems with the site. Safullin I have only noticed recently due to similarity to "Safin." Likewise surprised at his success. He's tall, big serve. Pressed Novak in 2, but nothing more to show for it. I see that Shapovalov is in the final in Korea. Plays Nishioka tomorrow. Djokovic faces Cilic, and Rune faces another unknown in Marc-Andrea Heusler.

I also noticed, as I was working up my draw challenges, that a lot of guys who are featuring tomorrow are also playing next week. I'm not really worried about Novak's recovery, but a few others might be questionable. Alcaraz playing the Astana with Novak. Oh, and Kyrios is back playing, in Tokyo! I thought he wasn't doing the Indoor HC season. Some fun stuff next week.

Astana will have the strongest 500 draw ever IMO! Nadal and Djokovic did China a few times, but this new tourn. looks more like a Masters! :fearful-face:

EVER?! I'm sure that's hyperbolic, though that isn't usually your thing. ;) :lulz1:
