One final look at the odds before the tourney begins (and after Andy Murray withdrew). There are 17 players with a puncher's chance and four contenders. Most important change is that JMDP's prospects have gone up considerably.

1. Federer 15/8 (35%)
2. Novak 11/2 (15%)
3. Cilic 7 ( 12.5%)
4. Rafa 15/2 (12%)
5. Nick / JMDP / Sasha 20 (5%)
8. Raonic 28 (3%)
9. Coric / Dimitrov / Thiem 50 (2%)
12. Anderson 66 (1.5%)
13. Edmund / Shapo / Nishikori / Isner / Goffin 100 (1%)

Next in line is Sam Querry with odds of 125.

Observations / Changes

1. Fed's chances have gone down even further slightly.
2. Rafa and Cilic have traded places again, but differences are marginal.
3. JMDP moved up considerably and tied with Nick and Sasha (possibly due to Andy's exit)
4. Andy Murray exits.
5. Shapo reenters.

Totally agree except I think even the first time was inexcusable. He is one of the best in the world and he knows a lot earlier than the day before the event if he can be competitive without risking injury.
My re-post to such opinion would be: Andy is not the only one guilty of such avoidance. E.g. your idol-fed has given up an ATP final championship match in London against Djoker, after a difficult SF with Stan, citing tiredness and that he did not feel competitive enough against a player he was about to face. He actually came into the stadium, thanked the fans who were expecting him to start playing, for their support and walked away. He did not cite any illness, just "non-competitiveness". Maybe he said something about back pain, I don't recall but essentially it could have been a lie, similar to what I make sometimes to get a "sickie" leave at work without bothering to see a doc. So, in that case, it was technically a retirement by Fed at 0-0 scoreline. People quote a remarkable stat that Fed never retired in his career, which is unprecedented. But that little event that can be called a "virtual retirement" arguably stains his impeccable record.
Although Sir Andy's dodgy indecisiveness looks bad, he should not be condemned for it. All players face difficult decisions sometimes, and all of them, even the "spotless" ones, have made mistakes, including off court PR mistakes.

Roger Federer
Funny title of fed conference.
Merriam-Webster defines 'wrack' as 'wrecked ship'. And to my ear, fed indeed pronounced it as 'racking' at 0:40 (I did not have time to watch the full video to have more clue), 'wracking' word does not formally exist in any English dialect. I think fed's English is closer to American dialect and normally very good but this time a clear mispronunciation, because 'verve racking' is too funny to be intended.
EDIT: or maybe the latter was indeed intended, what do others think?

He had hurt his back against Stan and had the Davis Cup final the following week. He got blown out the first match of that DC final vs Monfils. You really think he'd forfeit the YEC finals just because he was tired? Equating that to what Murray has done is a major reach.

Maybe Roger will ask Mirka if he can borrow some Kleenex for Cilic..Give me a break ..you are worried about him.I hope he is across the net vs Rafa for the final..Rafa will kick his Azz

The fact it'd be a final makes me think Rafa would beat Cilic. Any other round on grass I'd favor Cilic easily. The difference between SF and F is why I wanted Fed on the other half of Marin so badly. Either way if Mr. Blue Collar is in the SF thanks to his cream-filled draw then I think Fed would take Cilic if that's the match. There is nothing like the threat to Roger's legacy that can give him an extra survival gear.

6-1 Fed. Didn't have to do anything special but he'll take it. Conserve energy for 2nd week.

This scoreline can't be anything other than impressive especially after the week he had in Halle. Now all eyes on Coric vs. the Master of Coin.

Lajovic is abysmal today. He looks a different player from the one Federer faced last year.

Through quickly in straights. Most guys the first week aren't going to be world beaters. Round into form, don't play long matches and then step it up when it matters. If he does that he wins the tournament.

Other early winners are Cilic, Querrey, both easily and Pouille in 4 over Kudla

Borna losing would be good for Roger but I have a feeling Miss KS will roast my arse if it happens :) Still not done yet, master of coin is also known for mental roundabouts

Borna down 2 sets. Both players decide to relieve their bladders (like that will help). :lol6:
