He's probably this year's Ferrer. Doubt he'll win a single match there.

Ouch. Harsh. Depends on who else is in his group. And remember - Ferrer made the final in 2007 in Shanghai. He got schooled by Roger in the final but that's beside the point.

Seriously...Thiem ends up in a group with - let's say Roger, Goffin and Dimitrov? The Goffin and Dimitrov matches are a toss up. He ends up in a group with Nadal (or Roger), Cilic and Zverev? Hell no he's not winning a match...

Roger cannot be too thrilled to have Tiafoe for the first round again in Basel...

I was just talking about this on the Shanghai thread. "Not be too thrilled"...or "extra motivated" to put a beatdown on the kid? Roger knows that US Open match shouldn't have gone 5 sets. And Tiafoe knows it. And I think Tiafoe knows Roger just dismantled Rafa in Shanghai without too much problem. So the question is - what's the kid going to do differently now that Roger's not injured and playing much better? Hit bigger and try to hit Roger off the court? Cuz...the net's NOT an option...

I highly doubt Roger is worried about Tiafoe.

I think the darkhorses for the WTF are Zverev and Cilic. Roger is obviously the favorite, then Rafa, and I don't think Thiem, Dimitrov, Goffin etc have a chance. But Zverev and Cilic could surprise and win it.

I don't have as much faith in Cilic as you do. I'm amongst those who still wonders how he won the USO in 2014. Were it not for the height advantage, I'd like Goffin more.

Six spots are already taken in WTF. Rafa, Roger, Sasha, Thiem, Grigor and Cilic are in. There is a fairly tight race for the remaining two spots. Goffin, PCB, Uncle Sam and Kevin Anderson are the top contenders. JMDP, Tsonga, RBA and Isner are kind of long shot contenders. But, those below Isner currently are probably out of contention (even though they may have a pure mathematical chance). I am hoping JMDP and Uncle Sam make it. The reason is that these two are fairly unafraid of big names and bring it to them. We need that kind of players in WTF instead of those who will meekly surrender.

Goffin is a fighter. I'd take him as a good addition.

Djokovic and Wawrinka to return at Abu Dhabi in December.
Late, late December. Makes sense. But what's the word on Murray? He hasn't officially quit the season, has he?

Murray was playing it by ear, so we'll see. He's playing Fed in an exhibition in November. I guess Paris could be on the cards or he might just wait it out until next year.

Murray is out of official events the rest of the season, therefore he will not play in Paris. It was mentioned in the Guardian

Who benefits? Tiafoe? I am not up on the race there.
Tiafoe just misses the cut, if it is the case that the #8 slot goes to an Italian WC. It's Daniil Medvedev just swapped places on the list this week. Also in: Rublev, Khachanov, Shapalov, Jared Donaldson, Borna Coric and Hyeon Chung.

He wants to stay longer with his family (he has 2 boys) and not more traveling. I don't think it was the best time to do that, to comeback from an injury/surgery is not easy at all and starting with a new coach could be good in the longer term but the beginning could be a little bit confuse

Personally, I think Stan's top-level results are 50% due to Norman. The stabilizing influence he much needed. Without his coach, and at 32-33, I think Stan's best is behind him. I really don't think he'll win another Major, and he'll spoil, at best.
