I mean, to think, forget the calendar year slam. Serena was going for #22. Forget that. She was going to be the first woman to win 4 consecutive US Opens since.... Idk. Chrissy? She was going for 7 total wins at the US Open. Her first slam with 7 wins. She was going for her 5th straight slam final. I mean, at her age, it's impossible for her to get to 11 straight finals (Navratilova) or 13 straight finals (Graf). But it would have still been a step closer to those and really a step closer to something like 6 straight finals and maybe 6 straight wins (Navratilova).
I mean, I don't even remember the last time Serena lost in the semis of a slam. If she gets past the quarters she wins it. Or loses in the final (Stosur, US Open 2011). Actually, of course. 2009 to Clijsters with the foot fault and threat and point default on match point. That's the last time she lost in a semifinal. Just took a gander at her Wikipedia page... this loss in a semifinal makes it just the 4th loss in a slam semi ever.
But to celebrate what she did in fact accomplish this year... I mean, it's still amazing. She got close enough that equaling and passing Graf is all but assured and I mean, it only takes 4 more to pass Court. I mean, I'd be surprised if she doesn't pass them both. I'm definitely more upset about the loss of the calendar year slam, but I'm really upset about the loss of 4 straight US Opens and 7 total US Opens. It would have been her first slam with 7 wins. Something all of the greats have. Chrissy (French), Martina (Wimbledon), Graf (Wimbledon), Court (Australian). Nobody has 7 at the US Open though. And Chrissy played it when it was still on clay. I mean, she got to 6 of 3 slams by winning the US Open last year and the AO and Wimbledon this year. Which no one has done. But until she wins another French, Steffi is still the only one with 4 at all the slams. Serena will get to 7 at 1 or all 3 of those slams she's already got 6 of. But I was really hoping it was going to be the US Open this year.
As for the Panetta v Halep match. I totally called that. I wasn't even remotely surprised. Panetta has the experience and firepower to take it to Halep and not let the moment get to her. I've been watching Panetta and when she made the semis and Halep beat Vika I immediately put Panetta in the final. Because I fully think Vika would have beaten Panetta. And I was really annoyed that Vika fell again to someone she really shouldn't lose to. I mean, this year has been weird. She's healthy but hasn't been back at her best yet. I mean, yeah, she's lost her aura because of the time off. But she has lost a number of matches that her aura doesn't matter in. She should be headed to the final. That rain hurt her too. But like Serena, it's totally on her. She had her chances against Halep and let them slip away. She could be going for her 3rd slam tomorrow. Instead she'll be watching at home.
