OK. Serena fans, I have a good news for you guys to cheer up on. Even though Serena lost today, she has officially clinched YE #1 and that happened only today (aided by the loss of Jalepeno).

Roberta!! :eyepop :clap

The moment Masha dropped out, I posted a message saying Serena's chances of winning CYGS has come down drastically. If only Masha were healthy, this would not have happened. There would be no Vinci to play against in SF, just the personal whipping girl. :lolz:

Great match, great win for Roberta Vinci and great on court interview - very funny:clap So time for a bit of veteran tennis - who would have thought that. Hope someone has betted on Roberta with odds 1:300 - laughing all the way to the bank:clap

In case you didn't se the interview - here it is:

Davenporte mused that this was the biggest upset in tennis history! Oh please; with my history, it's probably not in my top 5! Talk about hyperbole! Vinci is a champion; though it's more in doubles! She held her nerve and finished unlike pretenders like Sharapova, Halep, Wozniacki, and Azarenka! ;-)

thats trying to rub it in......if they were listening between the lines she kept on saying that if it doesnt happen here it will happen somewhere even Patrick and Venus kept on saying the same thing.
its all about September 11...
something about this day that affects her....:cry

i hope she rest up for now and work on her serve and ground game. i don't want to see her struggling in matches, having slow starts like she did all year long.

I was listening to a replay and caught Mary and Lindsey undermining the CYGS by mentioning Serena had played 3 first time finalist in the majors won! Wow, it just kept coming; both ways! The feat was blown up all out of proportion, then they come back trying to give it context I guess! :puzzled :nono  :dodgy:

^ What are they talking about? She beat Sharapova in Australia -- not a first time finalist.

Might as well be! Maria's been lying down for Serena for years; no competition at all! Why they call this a rivalry still escapes me! :cover :puzzled :nono  :dodgy:

is that her fault that she played first timers...who was going to beat her Azarenka Maria or Halep,,There is an undercurrent of jealousy from the tennis world that a woman of color has this much success..Serena won 3 slams in one year more than Azarenka won in her career and isnt that great,I dont think she told the world that she wants to win all four at the beginning of the year.
I hope she takes a break from tennis...like a long vacation then come back for YEC.
I saw that she was struggling after her elbow injury break...lots of errors from FH and then gradually the bh.
I hope she has a word with Richard....thats what she needs right now.I noticed that when she won last year she was in great shape...this year no.

If Serena gets angry and drops the "dig a hole, perform a miracle to come out of it and in the end come out a victor" strategy and goes on a dominating spree next year and wins the CYGS, how would that be?

1. By end of year, she will have 25 more than anyone in open era.
2. She will have CYGS.
3. She could even have CYGGS, given Olympics is there in 2016.

The fundamental equations governing WTA has not been altered despite Serena's loss yesterday. She is still head and shoulders above the rest in skills and most of the WTA players are still chokers and so, it could happen.

I think if she gets to 23, she will be considered the GOAT. People usually don't count doubles.

I hope this loss gets Serena motivated to improve at net. Players are going to try bringing her to net and making her volley.

Serena can hang on until she's 40 and get 26 majors; she's still not the GOAT! I'm partial to a lifetime of championship play from someone who took the "position" of #1 seriously enough to stay focused! Maggie Court tech. is well above Navratilova's Open record of 59, but few went "Down Under" for many of those years of dominance! :nono  :dodgy:

I have the feeling that Serena is gradually going to decline now. She may have 2 or three more Slams left in her, but after watching her play this year, I think her drop will will drastic instead of gradual.

But then again, this is Serena and she has proven me wrong for years.

I think the thing will be if she and Patrick can reset something in her tennis to stop these slow starts and the mid match weirdness. She needs to improve at net. How many times have we seen her hit the ball back to the opponent rather than the open court? Or into the net? She definitely paid for her net skills during this match.

We will see what she brings in Australia. I do like how aggressive she is being with her ground game though unfortunately it has brought a rise in the ufe count if they can get that down again then she might have easier matches. The serve isn't in too bad of shape unfortunately df at the wrong time proved costly. Now that there isn't that pressure hopefully the level on her serve will improve.

I think she was just tired...2014 she played exhos after YEC with Caro then that asian thingy then went to Hopman cup,AO15,Fedcup Argentina,Indian Wells,Miami, fedcup were she played every match,Madrid,RG where she played lots of 3 sets,Wimby,Baastad,...this is too much
she was burntout when she got to NY...
SHE BETTER JUST GO TO YEC in October
