So Maria Sharapova goes on to the next stage no matter what happens in her match vs Flavia Pennetta :yahoo:  but the match result decides who will be following Masha - Lemme see I hope I have done the math right - If Masha wins in 2 then Agnieszka Radwanska proceeds - If Flavia Pennetta  wins or at least takes a set then she continues - I hope Masha wins the Round Robin 30 and I prefer Flavia Pennetta to proceed even if she could be a greater danger to Masha in the next stage

Sharapova erases an early break by Penetta and takes the first set. Aga must have cheered her on.

In doubles news, undefeated Chan sisters fell to the Spaniards but qualified for next round anyway.

Congratulations Maria but we also see Flavia float into the sunset.  I think she should be playing for another year at least.

Aga goes through on sets won, despite going 1-2.  Quite like Aga, so fairly pleased with the way the group has panned out.

But then everyone in the group went 1-2, other than Maria's 3-0

Worth to mention, that after US Open, both Simona and Flavia came to Singapore with a 3-3 record, Aga came with a 13-3 record. Nice way to end the year.

Red Group Round Robin Results:
  1. Maria 3-0
  2. Aga 1-2
  3. Simo 1-2
  4. Flavia 1-2

Maria had 12 double faults in her first match, she did cut it down to 7 in her second match. I am thinking 5 would be an acceptable number of DFs.</blockquote>
Who cares about Masha’s DFs and UEs as long as she wins?

– At least not I – Isn’t it just amazing and incredible that she’s defeated Radwanska and Halep in spite of a long time out?

I am a numbers freak, so I look at the numbers all the time.

Look at what happened when Maria cleaned up her serve:

Maria Sharapova defeated Flavia Pennetta 75, 61

I'm so amazed - amazed and in awe - Who had expected that Masha would be so dominant? - Now the difficult part starts - 2 matches left

Congratulations to Maria.   Sad to see Flavia end her career but I guess if she feels that she's had enough, that's it then.  I wish her all the best.

Garbiñe Muguruza defeats Petra Kvitova 64, 46, 75

If I've read it all right then Garbiñe tops her White Group 30

Is it really necessary to be so rah-rah when the other player is playing the last match of her career?  Personally, I'm sorry to see Flavia go, but I get it.

Maria v Petra will be interesting. Petra is an enigma... on her best days she is very tough and capable. Unfortunately, those days are too rare. If she's on top of her game, she's got a good shot, but I'll still predict Maria, and I think Garbine will beat Aga.

I'm sorry if my "rah-rah" has annoyed you but as my handle shows  - I am a Maria Sharapova fan and her success so far has made me very happy and proud - As for Flavia Pennetta
shrug.gif
I'm not sorry for her - It was her own decision to retire and not because of something Masha did - Besides  Flavia seems happy that it's over and that she's at the beginning of her new life so  there is no reason to be sad or morn - at least not for me :)

Garbine and Aga locked at 4-4.  Garbine got off to a poor start but she's played herself back in.
