No. 1 & 2 seeds out. Things are looking up for Halep and Sharapova. Maybe even Radwanska.

Very well deserved alright. Tough for Serena. The downward spiral has been pretty severe this year. Failed to make the quarters three slams in a row now. Thought Cornet should've signed a few more autographs though!

Though she lost 12lbs her legs look very heavy. Seems to me she has a lot of trouble now against faster, fitter opponents who hit with sharp angles. She wasn't even hitting the ball particularly hard and her backhand sucked today. She's not fast enough running around out there.

Serena has one more opportunity! Epic failure this year at the slams.

I thought this was going to be a tricky match for Serena, though not like this...I am lost for words.

Yeah, if her opponent can move her around, she's in trouble. Serena needs to dictate, not follow someone else's lead.

Halep d. Bencic 6-4, 6-1 :clap

Simo played better today but still not good enough for the higher stages. Too many mental lapses and weak mental moments. She may had done more unforced errors in last 2 matches than in the whole FO in Paris. I hope she improves again in the next match.
"slowly but surely"... :)

I would be mad if cheatpova wins this thing

Serena was far too passive today....she was content to play safe tennis.

Bummer, looks like Zvonareva is going out too. Was surprised she made it this far already though.

Likewise 'cos even as slow and passive as she was today, Serena would've beaten Screamapova for sure.

Well, I'm hoping Halep or Bouchard win the whole thing now personally.

Imo, Serena lost her tennis form, not her physical form. She was getting to the balls today but was doing nothing with them. I think that she stopped working on her game in training and was just going through the motions in training without focusing on the technical side. She trusted herself too much to be good technically, but if you dont work on that in training then you will not be good technically in matches.

She just needs to start playing serious tennis in training and not just work on her fitness.
She took her skill for guaranteed and didnt work on it in training. I can only guess. She was getting to the balls but was not hitting winners as she was used to do.

The more I watch WTA matches these days the more these slam upsets are basically no longer upsets, reason being the same best of 3 format at every single event means if you can beat someone in Dubai as Cornet did against Serena, then Wimbledon is just as possible. Sure, different surface but so what, you've proven you can beat them and the format is the same number of sets at slams. Much more of a tough ask in slams for the men with guys who may win a best of 3 against someone having way less chance in best of 5.

There are a few former number 1s and Petra too. All the ladies will be energized.

A lot of backhand errors too and she ended with another lame backhand into the net.

So ridiculous to see again and again; an also-ran taking out the top player! Women's tennis is just so hard to watch these days! Like a lot of the men, she hit a great shot to put Cornet on the defensive, then backed up! I can't stand it! The fore-court is still pretty pristine after a week! On grass? Sick and stupid! :nono :puzzled

Very little bite in any of Serena's shots. No idea why he looked so passive and sluggish and almost disinterested.
