But, I must say that this mixed doubles tourney did not live up to my expectations. Most of them were lame and tame matches. A travesty of medals.

Ok I have to say if you are playing for a medal you should have to play a full set in the third and not a breaker. That is garbage.

I don't know as a matter of fact. But, I guess these decisions are made by team captain and I think that is Mary Jo.

You should realize that Vee and Ram got in through ITF spot (wild card) and not through regular entry. Most probably, the decision was made to give USA two teams in the tourney. If venus were paired with Sock, I doubt that BMS and Ram would have been given ITF spot.
