Whatever the right or wrong, he has a point about the No campaign and its negativity: threats, whimpering, more threats, it would get my back up, too.

Of course, then on Yes side, there are threats of violence, hype, actual violence. It's been a nasty and divisive campaign... :nono

No campaign has came out of this particularly well. Both have been irresponsible.

The thing is, Murray seems to be basing his vote on his resistance to the manner of the No campaign, and not on the content of the Yes campaign, which is irresponsible and immature...

Spot on Kieran. If Andy genuinely felt it was best for Scotland then fine. I was stunned by his tweet and incredibly disappointed by just how immature his thought process appeared to be.

Andy made an impassioned plea for Scots to act in solidarity whatever is decided.

"Regardless of how it goes I think it's very important for everyone to come together afterwards".

Seriously Andy? The First Minister of Scotland has hijacked the saltire for the YES campaign. He has questioned the patriotism of Scots voting NO. We've been labelled traitors to Scotland. If Andy wanted to see negativity he should have been here in Scotland to witness it. To see his fellow Scots intimated, bullied and threatened. He's being incredibly naive. This campaign has divided Scotland. He picked a side. I hope he's happy to live with the consequences.

Iona, do you have any feel yet for how it's going to turn out?

No idea to be honest. I think we'll know around 5am UK time. I'm sick to my stomach.

The abuse Andy has been getting has been horrific. Death threats etc. People saying they wish he had been killed in Dunblane. I knew it would happen.

I can't help but wonder how he will be received at Wimbledon next year. Even if the Better Together vote prevails, Andy has made his opinion quite clear, and at a key moment, which is being perceived as swaying voters to side with the No campaign.

According to rules we should not talk to Iona during elections. She should not be influenced
by us. ;)

Apparently exit polls are banned too and so we have to wait for the real results to
come out.

That's unbelievable. He has a right to express himself. I think, Iona, that this vote will be very divisive and neither Scotland nor Britain will be the same again. I don't know what it's like up there among you, discussing it and arguing/debating with your neighbours and friends...

Good grief ... this is going to make his remarks a few years ago about football seem mild in comparison.

The funny thing is that the bolded statement is probably true independent of whichever
way the result of the referendum turns out to be.

I'm wondering the exact same thing. A lot of English Murray fans are very disappointed with him. A lot of Scots feel he should have stayed quiet. Very brave or very stupid. Standard Life signed a multi-million £ deal with Andy earlier this year. They are against independence and have threatened to move their Head Office out of Edinburgh. I'm sure they're thrilled with his tweet.

Of course he does and whilst I disagree with him 100% I respect his right to voice his opinion. However, to me it was just the view of yet another multi-millionaire Scot who doesn't live in Scotland telling us how to vote.

It's not been pretty Kieran. I never thought anything could divide Scotland like football or religion. This has been division on a whole new level. Friends, family, neighbours and colleagues at odds with one another. It's been horrible and sadly it won't end once the decision is known.

Is the divide mainly religious (Catholic/Protestant) or political?

Thank you. :)

I've been checking several (mainly the London Times), but a few I've looked at seem more like tabloids than legitimate news sources.

I honestly don't know for sure Kieran. I wish I did. I am aware that some old firm fans are voting the way you might expect. Elderly voters seem to be more inclined to vote NO. None of my family are voting YES.

"Scottish independence: Murray abused over Yes tweet"

TENNIS star Andy Murray has been targeted for online abuse after declaring his support for the Yes campaign in the independence referendum.

The Scot who had previously remained tight-lipped on the issue posted a message on Twitter just hours ahead of the polls opening, to state his position.

He tweeted: “Huge day for Scotland today! no campaign negativity last few days totally swayed my view on it. excited to see the outcome. lets do this!”

But his comments were met with abuse on the social media site.

An internet troll calling himself Harry S who tweets as @sportingharry wrote: “Wish u had been killed at Dunblane, you miserable anti-British hypocritical little git. Your life will be a misery from now on.”

Other users of the social media site were quick to condemn Harry S’s comments, with one tweeting: “you’re more of a disgrace to Britain than Murray ever will be” and another describing him as a “right horrible human being”.

Police Scotland were quick to condemn the tweet calling it “vile and disgusting” and warned that officers will be monitoring social media after the message left Murray’s fans shocked and horrified.

Assistant Chief Constable Bernard Higgins said: “People who put abuse such as this online should be utterly ashamed of themselves for making such vile, disgusting and distasteful comments.

“We are monitoring social media and where appropriate will take action against those involved.

“Social media is important for many people but it must be used responsibly. There is no place for personal abuse of any kind on it.”

Murray is the latest in a string of celebrities to be targeted online over their stance on the independence referendum.

Famous people who have urged Scots to stay in the UK - such as David Bowie and JK Rowling - have found themselves the subject of online abuse from pro-independence supporters.

The Wimbledon champion has been quizzed on the issue previously but dodged the question, although in an interview in June he did criticise Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond for waving the country’s flag at the tournament last year.

Murray did not have a vote as he is not currently resident in Scotland. In 2006, he courted controversy when he said he would support “anyone but England” in the World Cup.

In an interview last month he said that he did not think it looked likely the result would be a Yes, but he added that his preference would be to represent Scotland if the country became independent.

“If Scotland became independent, then I imagine I would be playing for Scotland,” he said.

“I haven’t thought that much about that yet because I don’t think it’s looking too likely that it’s going to happen.

“But if it did happen, then it would be pretty much the first time in my life that I would have ever (had the chance to play for Scotland).”

He added that he did not like making his views on politics known as previous comments had “caused me a headache ... and a lot of abuse”.

It may be early, but The Guardian says exit polls indicate the NO vote should win. Anyone now what time we should know?
