Well. A fairly quiet day I feel like. Serena never felt threatened. Which isn't surprising against Martic. Svitolina took care of business, which to me, also was not surprising. I did think Keys had a chance. She was great in Cincy. But Svitolina is overall the better player. Always has been. Which is why she has more titles and stays in the top 10 even when she's struggling. She's just more consistent than Keys. But of course Keys has had better success at the slams. So I thought that may play a factor. It wasn't to be for her tonight. Svitolina seems to have done what she needed to do after winning the YEC last year. Take a step back from exerting all her energy on the tour and put it forth in the slams. QF in Australia, lost o Osaka. Ran into former champ Muguruza at RG. Then the first semifinal run at Wimbledon, she got a favorable draw and ran with it. Lost to champ Halep. Now she's into her third quarterfinal of the year. Finally believes in herself it seems. Has never lost to Konta. It's not entirely one sided. Konta has won sets. But she's gotta like her chances to meet Serena. She shouldn't like her chances in that one. But they haven't played since 2016 and she did win their last match, at the 2016 Olympics. Both have been through quite a bit since then.
Serena's gotta deal with Wang Qiang first though. Needs to play her best and she should be fine. But if she lets Wang get a foothold.... she should still be able to fight her way back in and win it. But she can definitely lose this match. As Barty learned today. Wang is sneaky good. And while she'll likely lose a lot of points after the US Open. This quarterfinal run will likely move her up to .... well there are 4 players ranked ahead of her outside the top 10 still in this thing. But she should still hop over 5 players in the rankings no matter what.
