I think for Federer the need to adapt out of preservation is what did him in this match. Trying to shorten points via serve and net play because you know if you don’t the match will tailspin more in your opponent’s favor is a daunting task. Federer has always struck me as a player who wants things on his terms and as his career has progressed the less things are in his favor the harder it has been to adjust and in some cases win the match. As he said, normally the conditions haven’t affected his play, but this is a case where humid conditions can wear down a much older player. I am sure once he felt the effects of the humidity bearing in on him trying to execute play was going to be 50-50.

Such a devastating loss for Fed specially after the thug match where Fed looked good to give faker a decent match. Feels like the world has ended when Fed loses.

It was very obvious that Fed wanted to shorten the points as he did not want to be part of long grueling rallies.

1. That is why he did serve and volley so many times, probably even higher than he does in grass court matches.
2. That is also why, he was using drop shots so frequently (even though many of them were not clearing the net).

That coupled with the dismal first serve % (at one time it was 10% in the second set) were the story of the match.

Humidity/heat became an issue because most of his game sucked. If he did what he was supposed to do he wouldve been off the court in 2 hours and the conditions wouldn't have gotten to him. His forehand was absolutely devastating for the first two sets but everything else fell flat and when he pissed away the second set it all went downhill from there and that's when he went to extreme measures to shorten the points.

Don’t you think it’s all connected though? In my mind he just didn’t want to tough it out in the humidity, it zapped his motivation even more.

Time for Delpo/Isner.

Get ready for 2 weary warriors to go at it for 4+ hours! This is going to show how sad this tournament has degenerated to that it has become a tournament of entropy! When so many people are WD or retiring, it says something about the conditions that were created by not thinking this all the way through! I guess players are being forced to perform in an oven with no air circulating! WTF is wrong with these people? Have they never heard of FANS? If someone drops dead, will they get this taken care of then? :nono:  :banghead: :cuckoo:

Can't even explain to you what this felt like yesterday in NYC. I'm pretty fit and walked half a mile and thought I was about to pass out. Today is scheduled to be hotter so I can't imagine.

Let's not refer to Isner as a warrior please :nono:

It wasn't a complimentary moniker! He acts as if he's on his last legs from the jump and it's gotten old! He will drag that weary body of his around for as long as it takes, but I'm not appreciative of his play! It's like he's on auto-pilot without a brain in his head! :nono:  :cuckoo:

Are we thinking 4 tiebreaks Darth?
Boring AF :negative:

I'm hoping Del Po can take care of things easily but against that serve it might be tough. I'm actually now rooting for Del Po to win the title, given that we know he will fall today or roll over for the despicable one on Friday.

He is on auto-pilot. He just knows he has to serve well and hope to get a lucky point or two on the return in a tiebreak.
