I think for Federer the need to adapt out of preservation is what did him in this match. Trying to shorten points via serve and net play because you know if you don’t the match will tailspin more in your opponent’s favor is a daunting task. Federer has always struck me as a player who wants things on his terms and as his career has progressed the less things are in his favor the harder it has been to adjust and in some cases win the match. As he said, normally the conditions haven’t affected his play, but this is a case where humid conditions can wear down a much older player. I am sure once he felt the effects of the humidity bearing in on him trying to execute play was going to be 50-50.
