As players go through the trials and tribulations on the green stuff, let us use this thread to alert others of projected & impending upsets and to discuss upsets already happened that are of significance, as you please. I am not going to define what is an upset. It surely would include a lower ranked player defeating a higher ranked player, but not necessarily limited to it. I am neither going to define which ones are significant. Just use your own judgment.

To begin with let us stick to 1st round matches only (to avoid hypothetical discussions of matches that may not even get played). I see the following five matches with upset potential.

1. Belinda Bencic vs. Pironkova (P is grass specialist)
2. Maria Sharapova vs. Konta (K has local support and M did not warm up)
3. Lucie Safarova vs. Alison Riske (Risk has rewards with ball bashing sometimes)
4. Aga vs. Hradecka (Will the slump continue? H has caused upsets even in singles)
5. Cornet vs. Konjuh (this may be the most competitive match).
6. Timea Baczinsky vs. Julia Georges (J likes grass, T likes drop shots, not that much suited in grass)

Most probably 2 and 3 will not actually happen, but the others are quite possible. Of course, Bencic and Aga (1 and 4) just had a great warm-up in Eastbourne, but it can still happen. So, I think most probable are 5 and 6. Which ones of the above do you think will materialize? Are there any other potential upsets that you see for the 1st round?

I should add Heather Watson vs. Caroline Garcia as well to the list. Heather will have crowd support and Caroline is the lowest ranked seeded player.

CSN is the first top seeded casualty. Goes out rather meekly to Ostapenko 6-2 6-0

That was brutal, getting bagelled by a player most people have not even heard the name of.
CSN is primarily a clay player and so most do not expect her to go deep here. But, still this is a huge upset going out to unknown and bagelled in that.

I would add Hantuchova vs Cibulkova to this list only because it's really intriguing 1st rounder. Daniela has a really nice grass court game and Cibby is returning from injury so no one is expecting much from her.

Bagelled CSN in the last set.

12th seeded Genie goes back into the bottle taken out by an unknown player in straight sets.
It is actually a rare occasion when I have to call a #12 seed going out in opening round as not much of a big upset.

p.s. Wimbledon lost the opportunity to put her on centre court. :snicker

Big Alert!!! Halep down 4-1 in the decider to Cepelova. You might remember that name. She beat a tired Serena at the Family Circle Cup last spring.

Upset Alert: Madison, mindlessballbasher, Keys might be shown out of the door.
Voegele is up a set and a break over Madison in #3 court.

This is how Madison is capitalizing on draw opening up with Genie leaving!

Maddy rebounds by breaking back and taking the 2nd set 6-3. I gotta think they are done for the day. It's almost dark over there.

The worst has to be Genie. At least I've heard of the upsetters, Watson and Cepelova.
Only the most avid fan has heard of Ying-Ying Duan
In her presser, Genie said she didn't feel prepared for this match. Prepared? For a qualifier?
Prepared after going 'deep' in your last few tourneys?
Let's keep it all the way real....You need to take a break and do some reevaluation.

She just dumped a ton of points, too (1,300). Live Rankings has her dropping 12 places today, down to No. 24.

No surprise but still shocking the way she has fallen. Does she have a sports shrink yet? If not, she needs one ASAP.
