Let me guess! Rafa was injured. I read somewhere that's he's leaving his body to medical science when he dies...

Federer is not #1 yet and some are gloating already, god help us if he does reach #1 ranking:laydownlaughing I hope Nole will do just enough to retain that #1 ranking though;)

If it were any other player in his position, then he would have been crucified for the prospect of becoming #1 in such circumstances. Poor Ferrer gets so much grief for playing lots of tournaments and being highly ranked for years:nono

Yes, Rafa is either injured/sick or winning everything, there is no middle with him.;)

Well, get back to me if Ferrer is ever ranked #1 but don't expect a reply 'cos I'll have impaled myself on a rusty bread knife.

In fairness, Billie, Federer is 33 - that's a grandad in tennis terms - so to end the season #1, regardless of how he gets it, would be unprecedented. Ferrer has never come close to this, and he's even showing the effects of his age more than Federer. It would be a season that would be remembered...

I know it would be deserved, but I have to take little digs at his fans, come on!!!

My comparison with Ferrer is not about #1, but them moaning at his high ranking every year, which he also deserved.;)

Davydenko did the same thing too for years. Played every week. Maybe if he hadn't we'd still be watching him play at a high level and he wouldn't have bust his wrist :( Can't actually remember the last time I saw him play come to think of it. I know he skipped Wimbledon this year and probably he didn't want to bother qualifying for the other events but strange to not at least see him play some 250s. He may well retire next year sadly.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who appreciates him. I miss him, too. I know he's not retired, but it feels like it. He and Nalbandian are the two I miss the most from the current generation.

Yes, they didn't plan properly, Federer does, still. Anyway my point is that players decide and play what they think is best for them. Some learn from their mistakes, some don't. Playing too many tournaments today is suicide unless they pace themselves nicely and leave week(s) off between tournaments. Eventually everything catches up with players, wear and tear and everything.

Same for me actually with those 2. Both really missed by many no doubt. I still hope Haas can come back next year as he plans and I miss Soderling too. Still hold out a small bit of hope for him as he's only 30 which these days is young when you factor how late guys are peaking and playing till plus he hasn't been out there doing mileage and is therefore younger in tennis terms just like Haas except Soderling's had no major injuries, just this damn energy sapping virus.

Actually there is a similarity between Ferrer and Federer this year. Federer's ranking is partially through being so damn consistent, making it deep in almost every tournament he's been in, even though he's "only" won four tournaments and none of them Slams. It is sort of like a "Ferrer Plus" season.
