Roger and Andy are tied in total ranking points with 7525 each. But, Roger is officially #2 right now as he has won more points than Andy in big events.

Finally, we now have a situation where we don't have to solve a third order differential equation to figure out who will be seeded #2 at RG.

Whoever, Andy or Fed, goes further at Rome will be seeded #2 at RG. If they both exit at the same round, Fed will be seeded #2 at RG.

On paper it looks like Andy should be able to go further at Rome as he has much easier draw compared to the brutal draw of Fed.

I think the current ranking points include the results of Rome last year, where Federer reached the final whereas Murray withdrew before the 3rd Round, so Federer defends 510 points more than Murray this week. So if Murray loses before the quarter finals Federer needs the final to stay #2 and if Murray loses in the QF or SF Federer needs to win the tournament.

But because he defends less points at the French Open, both won a 500 on grass last year and Federer had better results at the last two Wimbledons, he should have great chances to get seeded #2 at Wimbledon due to their formula.

You are right on. GSM not so much. ;)

Once again, I put my foot in my mouth (after posting the correct calculation on this very same page)as the live rankings page have not yet removed their Rome points. Andy has a lead of 520 points going into Rome (after last year's Rome points are removed). So, the chances of Fed getting #2 seed at RG are next to nil (just like Rafa's chances of getting into top 4).

1. If Fed does not reach the finals at least, Andy is #2 independent of what he does in Rome.

2. If Fed reaches finals, the only way Fed can become #2 is if Andy loses in the 2nd or 3rd round in Rome.

3. If Fed wins Rome, then Fed can become #2 as long as Andy does not reach the finals.

Scenario is 1 is the most likely scenario.

p.s. I promise to double check before making another silly error in this thread.

Correct, but as I mentioned yesterday, the Rome points for last year came off today and Murray is now 510 points ahead of Roger.

So I guess No1e with 1,500 more points than #2 and #3 combined, can't be overthrown from #1 before Cincinnati even if he doesn't add a single point and one of Federer or Murray wins every tournament between now and then.

They also figured that No1e needs exactly 2 years to overtake Federer in total number of weeks at #1, which in turn means, in that case No1e will overtake Federer on Victory Day 2018. How symbolical!

2 years is a long time in tennis... Don't count your chickens before they've hatched!

It is a long time, you are right. I think that Mastoor didn't realize that using "will" gives his statement a certainty, perhaps "would" be a better word.

No injuries, that's all I am thinking.

Pouille is charging up the rankings, definitely a player to watch. I don't see a future elite, but he could be a borderline top 10 player, ala Simon or Almagro.

What would last for about five minutes? "Borderline top 10" means only dipping in briefly, but mainly top 20.

Simon did not drop in just "briefly" in the top 10. Almagro, yes, indeed he was there just briefly.

Players comparable to Almagro in recent 4-5 years were: Monaco, Isner, Anderson.
