Pouille is charging up the rankings, definitely a player to watch. I don't see a future elite, but he could be a borderline top 10 player, ala Simon or Almagro.

Simon did not drop in just "briefly" in the top 10. Almagro, yes, indeed he was there just briefly.

Players comparable to Almagro in recent 4-5 years were: Monaco, Isner, Anderson.

We're back to semantics (again). Here are Simon's tenures in the top 10:

10/20/2008 - 10/12/2009
9/14/2015 - 10/5/2015

So we're talking about a year out of his entire career. I'd say that it is relatively "brief." When I think "top 10 player" I think in terms of someone whose peak level is top 10, and thus has multiple years in the top 10. To me Simon is a classic top 20 player. Like most top 20 players, he'll dip into the top 10 on occasion or or brief spells. He might be a bit more successful than, say, Monaco or Anderson in that regard - closer to a Fernando Verdasco or Richard Gasquet.

Yes, we are back to semantics, I guess. For me brief is a term I would use for a few weeks, up to 10 or so.
Those who lasted half a year + I would put in a superior category. Still not a true top 10 player, but someone who had a more significant presence than a visitor.

True, which is why I initially called him a "borderline" top 10 player. But again, when I think in terms of top 20 players, Simon fits my definition in that he's spent the vast majority of his prime in the top 20, but not top 10 range.

Extra incentive: If Rafa wins the tournament, he goes into RG at #4. That would be nice. I suspect he knows that. So, probably does Novak. If he gave it a thought, he'd realize that was probably better for him, too. :)

^ Novak's chances vs. Rafa figure to be better in a QF or semi instead of a final. Also, his chances vs. Rafa at RG are way better, as in overwhelming favorite, if he wins tomorrow. If Rafa wins then RG is a lot more wide open.

I expect Rafa to win, Novak has struggled with 2 cupcakes and Rafa and Uncle Homie know his career is on the line in the next few weeks. Rafa has a lot more to lose tomorrow. If he doesn't win RG this year he is probably done. At least I can hope.

Murray opened a lead of 1020 over Roger in the ranking. Are the days in the top 2 for Roger over?
Considering his health issues that might be it.

OMG I hope so! IMO he's still the GOAT, but it doesn't say much about the present and future generation allowing the old guy to hang around the top like this; same back "in the day" with Connors! I consider today's players a lot better, but it's obvious physical ability isn't enough; emotionally and psychologically they aren't ready to take over! :cover :nono

Not only health issues but a lot of points to defend at Wimbledon and the USO. Tall order to defend those even 100% healthy at his age. But people have written him off for years and he keeps defying us so who knows.

Hope you realize Novak is beating all the same weak players as Roger is. If Novak is still hanging around and in the top 5 at 34 will you be slagging him like this too ? :p Bandwagon hoppin', loyalty lacking, punk ass MF :snicker ;)

I was about to answer until coming to the end of your rant! That wasn't funny or respectful! On my list of losers I won't even bother responding to again! Nice knowing you! :nono :nono :nono :cover :cover :cover :eyepop

LOL, I put a wink on it as we all know you're a Federer fan who ditched Roger as he got older and jumped on the Djokovic bandwagon by your own admission here. Hence the comment about who is next in line as the same happens to Novak :p It was all meant to be completely harmless as is obvious by the laugh and wink in my post.

I was thinking that Roger's #2 seed is safe at Wimbledon, thanks to the grass seeding formula.
But, upon closer inspection, it appears that things may come down to the wire.

Roger will get an addition of 900 (75 % of his best grass result from the year prior to that which is Wimbledon 2014 finalist points of 1200) + 1200 (100 % of points earned on grass in the preceding year) + whatever Roger gets in Stuttgart this year (may be a 250) + whatever Roger gets in Halle this year (may be 500). So, the addition to Roger's ranking points will be a minimum of 2100 and a maximum of 2850.

Murray's addition will be 375 (75% of 500 points for winning Queen's which is his best result on grass in the preceding year) + 720 points for reaching SF in Wimbledon 2015 + Whatever he gets in Queens this year. So, the addition will be a minimum of 1095 and a maximum of 1595.

So, Roger's lead due to grass formula will be a minimum of 505 and a maximum of 1755.
The average lead of Roger will be 1130. But, then given that Murray has a lead of 1020 right now and given that it has a high chance of increasing further at RG, Roger may well end up losing his #2 seed at Wimbledon as well.

If Roger needed another reason to play at RG this year (apart from gauging where he is at competitively, getting match practice before grass season starts and extending the consecutive GS appearance streak), this is it. In fact, this may be more important reason than the others.

Wth Andy leading Roger by 1420 points now, Fed can forget about his #2 seeding in Wimbledon also for all practical purposes. :cry

Really? I thought I read here or another site he very well could still hold onto the #2 seed due to grass court computations and making the final last year! He'll have to win Halle though more than likely! :dodgy:

There is still a small hope, but it is highly unlikely that Fed will be seeded #2 at Wimbledon, despite his advantage in the grass court formula. See my post #1880 in this thread for details.

They could still ad hoc place him in the draw as #2; unlikely with the new comp. system, but they could!

No, they cannot. For men, it is completely determined by the formula. For women, the committee decides based on their subjective opinion.

Not like they would hose their "not so fair haired boy" Murray anyway! That straight set semi loss last year to the old man didn't help IMO! :dodgy:  :nono :cover
