I'm keen to see how the guys who've made strides in the 250s and 500s (Thiem, Kyrgios, Klizan etc) do in the Masters events. Next month should be interesting...

It should be. And let's not forget that although I like him so far this season, Thiem is already 22. The Big 3 all had begun their slam winning careers by that age, and we're celebrating him winning a 500, as if it's an unheard of thing.

Very true. "Even" Andy Murray, by Thiem's age, had already won four Masters titles, reached a Grand Slam final, and was no.4 in the world. In contrast, Thiem is only no.14 in the world, and has so far never got past the QFs of a Masters, or the 4R of a slam. But as you say, the younger generation has been so unremarkable that Thiem's recent wins seem exciting, even though if he'd been part of the Rafa-Novak-Andy generation, Thiem's recent wins would have seemed like nothing in comparison. That's why I'm interested to see how these younger guys do in the Masters, when it's a proper field with all the top guys. Then we'll see who's really 'got it'! And also, who has the consistency to back up some good wins with more good wins, rather than just say 'Well, I had a nice February, now I'll coast for a bit'.

I'm not slating him, by the way, I'm just thinking out loud about a confab I had with a fellow poster today, one whose opinion I respect. I suppose we expect players to peak later now, because of the physicality of the sport, and this is true, but really, don't all young great prodigy champs also have a mental maturity and fortitude that's beyond their years, and this is something that the generation(s) that followed the Big 3 sorely lack?

Yes, as El Dude has pointed out, statistically, the generation after Novak, Rafa and Andy's - Generation Grigor - is so far the least successful in Open Era history for its age. I mean, has the game really got that much more physical since Novak and Andy rose to become elites eight or so years ago (both of them entered the top 10 when still in their teens!)? I don't think so, I think it's just that the next generation are not as good...

I've made the same observation, Kieran, but it isn't really a fair comparison. I don't think Thiem will be an all-time great, but I think he'll at least be a top 10 player, and maybe even win a Slam or two.

I see Fritz and Zverev as having more upside than Thiem.

But yeah, super excited about Indian Wells and Miami.

I'VE already "coined" these newbies as GUTLESS! They have the ability to beat any 1 of the Big 4; just can't finish! Biggest example was Grigor at Cincy vs Murray; had multiple breaks, MP's, and found a way to blow it! I'm done with them all; Dimi, Ferrer, Berdych, Tsonga, Cilic, & so many others that have been around for years only playing 1 or 2 GS finals! Kei, Nick, & Milos give me some hope of late! The teeny bobbers have been impressive in Thiem, Fritz, & Klizan! :dodgy: :popcorn

Fiero, just to nitpick, Klizan is actually older than all of those players and turns 27 in July. Hardly a "teeny bopper."

Klizan would actually be an example of a player who fits the "Late Arrival" theory, which suggests players are peaking later nowadays...

Kieran, one thing I've found in my research into the records of various players and how they develop, is that non-elites tend to rise slower or stall out, or some combination of both. As a general rule, the better the player, the quicker and smoother--and earlier--the rise.

This might seem obvious, but I think it challenges the view that Klizan's developmental trajectory somehow supports "Late Arrival Theory." It may simply be that he's a good player who is more fully coming into his own in his mid-20s, as non-elites are sometimes prone to do. I think we're a bit over-excited about Klizan if we look at him as one of the next wave of elite players, when the more likely case is that he's a top 20 player who will win ATP 250s and 500s, and maybe challenge for a Masters, but won't get more than a "cup of coffee" in the top 10. Think of someone like Gilles Simon.

Actually, Dominic Thiem is probably another instance of this, although he looks like he could be up a notch, more in the Tsonga/Berdych category.

But historically, the true elites and all-time greats ALWAYS are in the top 100 as teenagers, and ALWAYS making second weeks of Slams and winning their first titles before they can legally drink in the US. When looking for the next elite player, we really have to use these sorts of things as benchmarks.

So when I look at Martin Klizan, I see a developmental pattern that fits into the mold of a top 20 type player; when I look at Thiem, I see a pattern that fits into that of a top 10 player. I think this is a safer conclusion than saying these guys are future elites that are just coming into their own later than usual, due to Late Arrival Theory.

(I'm not saying that LAT is entirely false, just that it isn't necessary to explain Klizan and Thiem, and actually there is a more likely explanation)

What El Dude just said about Klizan is true. I lost count of how many players these days peak in the range of 25-30. That is why I keep saying that and many specialists I read say the same thing, pleysr develop these days 2-3 years later.
Look at Cuevas for example, he won his first title at 28y, and now at 30 he is collecting them one after the other. Or Bautista Agut, have you heard about him when he was 22 or 23? I don't think so.
Thiem is improving at a pace similar to which Grigor was 2 years ago, at the same age 22.
Based on that, I am expecting him to make at least SF in masters (like Grigor did in Rome) and at least QF in slam, like Grigor did at RG 2 years ago.
What will make Thiem better than Grigor, I think is his mental toughness. So once Thiem will break into the top 10, I am almost sure he will not fell out right away, and stabilize his status as a top 10 player going forward.
He will likely replace the Tsongas or Ferrer's of the world.

Yup. As I see it, of the younger players on tour who are moving up, here are their likely/potential future levels in terms of regular rankings:

Top 5: Kyrgios, Zverev, Fritz, maybe Coric
Top 10: Thiem, Coric, Raonic, Nishikori, maybe Dimitrov and Chung
Top 20: Klizan, Paire, Dimitrov, Goffin, Tomic, Vesely, Chung, Edmund, Pouille, Kokkinakis, Sock

Etc. I didn't include anyone who hasn't made it into the top 100.

I am still skeptical about Coric as a future top 5 player. I know I have to give him a pass because he is still very young. But the last 6 months or so he has been underwhelming for me.

I hear you, herios - my skepticism is growing as well, not only from what some have said--that he doesn't have many weapons--but the fact that he's essentially stagnated in the rankings for the better part of a year. One of the big differences in the rankings histories of great vs. merely very good players is that after the greats enter the top 100, they keep climbing relatively quickly while the lesser players often stall out for a while at various stations along the way.

For instance, check out the rankings climbs for various players through age 22:

Sampras (17-22): 97, 81, 5, 6, 3, 1
Federer (17-22): 301, 65, 13, 6, 2, 1
Nadal (16-22): 200, 49, 51, 2, 2, 2, 1
Djokovic (17-22): 186, 78, 16, 3, 3, 3
Murray (18-22): 63, 17, 11, 4, 4
Del Potro (18-22): 92, 44, 9, 5, 258
Gasquet (16-22): 161, 93, 107, 16, 18, 8, 24
Ferrer (18-22): 407, 219, 59, 71, 49
Berdych (18-22): 113, 45, 24, 13, 14, 20
Cilic (18-22): 170, 71, 22, 14, 14
Wawrinka (18-22): 171, 168, 54, 30, 36
Tsonga (19-22): 163, 338, 212, 43

There are many others, of course, but you can see clear patterns. The true greats keep rising, with few stalls (Sampras and Nadal are exceptions, but they were 17-18 when they "stalled," but then had huge jumps from 18 to 19). The lesser players tend to both rise slower, but also get caught at various levels.

The above also shows the tragedy of del Potro, who was rising like an elite player but then got injured.

Now take a look at some younger players:

Nishikori (18-22): 286, 63, 418, 98, 25
Raonic (19-22): 373, 156, 31, 13
Dimitrov (17-22): 493, 288, 106, 76, 48, 23
Kyrgios (18-21): 182, 52, 30, 27
Coric (18-20): 93, 44, 48
Zverev (17-19): 136, 83, 58
Fritz (18-19): 174, 81

The last four include their current live rankings, as of 3/3, but given how early it is shouldn't be taken too seriously. As you can see, the first three all rose relatively steadily, but not as quickly as the greats. Raonic was pretty quick, but he was older and then he stalled out a bit. Dimitrov rose steadily but not quickly, with no major jumps.

There's hopeful signs in the last four, although less so for Coric -- unless he rises later this year. But unless he makes it into the top 20 or so, I think we should temper our expectations, at least based upon his rankings.

Moving one more notch up would ensure he does not face Top Four (avoided the B4 term)
before quarterfinals at GS and MS tourneys.

Dear Mr. Gasquet,
Enjoy your time in the top 10, because it ain't gonna last.

Regards,
Dominic

....

Seriously though, Thiem is going to be in the top 10 very shortly. Through clay court season, he and Gasquet have similar points to defend, so the question is can he out-perform Gasquet by about 300 points over the next five Masters, Grand Slam, and some smaller tournaments...I don't see why he can't.

Marin Cilic and John Isner are between the two, so Thiem isn't alone in knocking on the door of the top 10. Here are the live rankings:

9. Tsonga 2950
10. Gasquet 2705
11. Cilic 2545
12. Isner 2495
13. Thiem 2420
14. Raonic 2050

Lucky # 13 for Dominic. Good for him, he'll probably rise higher in short period of time. Fritz is rapidly rising as well.

theim in the top 10 would be ideal, and raonic back in there ..if he could stop being injured for a bit. top 10 is as stale as a 4week old dog turd.
