New career highs Jan. 11, 2016:

17. Bernard Tomic 23y

So Tomic quietly and steadily keeps going up. Now, with the (unfortunate to me) absence of Gasquet, he gets one of top 16 seeds for AO. A lot of hype around Kyrgios, but Tomic is far ahead (ok, he's older, I know).

Rafa would want to (and most likely will) move into top 4 before RG commences. My question is who will he displace? Obviously not Novak. Will it be Cry baby or Expecting dad or Maestro?

Murray's the most likely with the change of family situation! He's already missed a FO or 2 unlike the others who don't miss events! :nono  :dodgy:

It was an interesting race to the finish line between Tomic and Paire who both passed Feli Lopez, who was the 17 ranked before.
Feli was upset in R1 in Doha by Munoz de la Nava opening the door for Tomic and Paire.
Benoit had to go deeper one round than Bernie. Both made the semis in their events, thus Bernie stayed ahead of Benoit.
Considering that Tomic had to upset Nishikori on his way to the semis, you can say he really earned that 16 ranking spot at the AO.

You are saying Tomic is ranked 17 in your earlier post. I assume that you know of somebody not playing but ranked in top 16 in order for tomic to get 16 seed.

Gasquet is injured. It was announced a few weeks ago, that he withdrew from Doha and the AO.

Not sure anyone mentioned it but Roger is back to number 2 again with the AO points off. Back where he belongs. How long he stays there is anyone's guess and I reckon himself and Murray will trade the 2nd and 3rd spots regularly throughout the year.

That is not official yet, until AO is over. let's see how this event pans out first.

Nadalites, take heart. Even though Rafa lost in R1, he is guaranteed to remain in top 8 when AO finishes. This is important as it does not matter whether you are #5 or #8 for the purposes of getting advantage in draw.

We have now reached a point in the tourney, where I can say for sure that whoever goes further in AO will be #2 after AO.

Even if Fed does not get to become #2 by the end of AO, Fed will surely be ranked #2 for the IW. This is because while Andy is taking Feb. off due to impending baby, Fed will be playing in Rotterdam and Dubai.

But, Andy could again become #2 in time for RG, as Fed is taking off for two month after IW.

Whatever happens, Fed will be seeded #2 in Wimbledon, as they will add 2000 grass point to him due to the formula being used, while Andy will get very less bonus points.

Actually, Rafa has not fallen a bit in rankings. Despite his first round loss, he gets to retain his #5 spot.
This would mean he would be #4 seed during clay court warm-up season (as Rog is skipping that part).
So, he can never face Novak before SF during the warm-ups. Good for him.

I'm speaking in relation to "expectations" concerning the draw! Why would a top echelon player care? Just sayin' Rafa's not so elite anymore! His fans and "camp" have to be concerned where he's seeded these days! :dodgy:

If Murray wins against Raonic, he will get to retain his #2 ranking. Otherwise, he will give it up to Fed.
