Also a change this week in the top 10.
Richard Gasquet drops out again, and Marin Cilic is back in the 10 spot.

We just can't rid ourselves of these old veterans; Mon Dieu! :cover :nono  :dodgy:

It just shows how weaker the younger generations is, doesn't it?

Heaven knows I've been saying it for years, but I think Zverev and Thiem might break through! Thiem's won at least 3 tourney's and Sasha was in the final against him last week! :dodgy: :clap

Thiem, yes, good chances this year, Zverev not yet.

Yeah, I don't see Zverev in the top 10 then this year. I think Thiem could make it, and possibly Goffin. Kyrgios is another. To get into the top 10 you really have to go deeper into Slams, and Zverev hasn't made it past the second round yet. But I do think he'll make it into the top 20 this year.

I wouldn't mind if Gasquet and Cilic quietly faded away.

Thought Cilic and Gasquet had already faded away a long time ago!

Cilic is ranked 10 if you have not noticed.

They both hang around with quietly solid results. Cilic's Slam win has been off his points for awhile, yet he's still right there. In a way he's sort of like the poor man's Stanimal, except he's only gone into "beast mode" once - but at the right time. There are many superior players to him who have never won Slams: Tsonga, Berdych*, Ferrer, Soderling, Davydenko, Nalbandian, etc, just among recent players.

*I'd say Berdych and Cilic are similar in ability, but Tomas has just been more consistent.

For how long after losing in 1st Round of the French Open? :nono  :dodgy: :cover

It will depend also on how his close competition will do, because the majority defend a lot more points than him.
Some changes will happen though, but too early to say.

I just took a quick peak; Gasquet and Goffin can slide past him if they win their next match alone! :clap :p

Cilic is ranked 10 if you have not noticed.

He surprised me by reaching the USO SF again last year and defended his QF points at Wimbledon so that's probably the bulk of his points there but he's been poor enough at all the other non slam events. A lot of his points could be dropped in the next few months if he doesn't defend them.

That is always the case, with all the players. Gasquet is defending a SF run at Wimbledon, Cilic at USO.
Especially for Marin will be tough, he is just coming back from a knee injury, he has not played at all until Geneva and now he lost right away.

Neither look good so far this season.

True about Gasquet, Goffin needs to win his next 2 matches to pass Cilic.

Tsonga vacates his spot from top 8. Most probably will be taken up by someone who will reach QF at RG without facing a single seeded player. :cry

It happens! Remember a couple weeks ago, Pouille was a LL and made it all the way to the semi at a Masters, losing to Murray at the Italian! He got tons of points and all that $$! :clap  :p

So here is an interesting development. If either Goffin or Thiem wins tomorrow in their R16 matches, they will surpass current #10 JW Tsonga in the live rankings. Meaning, there's a good chance that at the end of Roland Garros and when the rankings are updated next Monday, we'll have a new top 10 player.

It isn't guaranteed, because David Ferrer is also shooting for a top 10 spot and he's just 5 pts behind Thiem, but there's also a scenario where BOTH make the top 10: if they both win R16, at least one wins QF, and both Ferrer and Berdych lose tomorrow. Then Thiem and Goffin are guaranteed a spot in the top 10 (this assuming that Bautista Agut doesn't upset Novak and go on a run into the top 10).

The times they are a changin'...maybe/almost.

Just tell me what needs to happen for Milos to get out of top 8.:please:
