So often in the past I have mentioned the reason that Rafa and the other big 3 have remained on top for so long is that there is not another super teenager on the horizon. Eg.. Let me expand on how great a super Teenage Rafa was and a great player he is still. Rafa is the only player to win his 1st grand slam event that he has entered for the very 1st time. He has won a grand Slam event in every year since he has been on tour. He has a career H2H record against every player in the top 30. Have any men tennis player every held that distinction. At the USO, he has a career H2H advantage of every 32 seeded player. He has a double his career H2H record against the greatest player ever, Federer and if he beats him at the USO, he has beaten him at every slam(too bad they can't meet in the final this year because he would have had an opportunity for a career grand slam final over Roger). IMO, not only is Rafa the greatest super Teenager EVER, he has a slim but good shot to be the greatest player ever.

Goods post AP.
Yesterday I heard J. McEnroe saying " Mark my words Nadal will be the greatest of all time , better than Roger"
We will wait and see until he changes that.

the days of 17-18 year old tennis prodigies are over and long gone now in our sport.

RE: Rafael Nadal : What Makes Him Great

well the game has changed.

now there are way too many sharks on the tour.

you need a few years of experience on the tour before you can be somebody significant.

the closest thing to young prodigies we have now are tomic, jerzy, and dimitrov.

I don't think they are going to be able to win a single masters event, let alone a slam.

...until the next one shows up. Might be a while though...

Johnny Mac spoke to this yesterday. He thinks there will be more, but they don't come around often, which is a fair assessment. Djokovic was a few months short of 21 when he won his first AO, I think, and JMDP was just weeks short of 21, but they were still pretty young. And Murray was 19 when he cracked the top 20.

I agree there will be more...just don't know when. The thing is , we all know the game has become more physical but that does not mean you have to be a big dude with huge muscles. It means you have to be fit to go to toe to toe with someone for 5 long sets if needed and have the mental fortitude to understand what's at stake ... Nadal was able to do it at 19. I see some juniors training in my club and these are just 15-16 year old kids but they have the body of an adult already...and they train hard.

Somewhere, sometime another teenager like Rafa or Becker will come along and just take over the game before even he himself realizes he is not supposed to.

No No Mr Tented.. I think you may have misunderstood my statement.. Rafa is the 1st male teenager to win his 1st slam on his 1st attempt. Wilander enter the 1981 AO

I don't think I understand you, either. Rafa had played other Slams before RG. In fact, I think he'd played all 3 of the others.
