Welcome back, Mastoor!

Your disappearance coincided with the Montreal semi. Glad to see you recovered!

As for poker and sending messages to kids, Rafa pays his taxes and can spend his money how he likes. If he was so addicted to gambling he might move to Monte Carlo. Or he could move there to avoid paying his taxes. That'd be a great message for the brats, eh?

:snigger

You did NOT go there! :clap

Just a bit of harmless joshing! :p

guys like nadal and roger also possess superior court intelligence: they know how to do problem solving on the court and win matches.

they have won simply too much. court intelligence has to be one of the variables.

Perhaps Novak should worry about his tennis, rather than his PR...

I must hat off Rafa because every tennis player pays taxes but he is the only one who 1. complains about it, 2. breaches the tax laws of his own country and 3. is with fans praising for that (paying the tax).

And Kieran, honestly it doesn't surprise me that you defend your guys popularising mafia business - gambling in this case.

RE: Rafael Nadal : What Makes Him Great

I believe that Nadal is "great" because of his unique level of shotmaking prowess that no player in the modern game possesses.

Anyone who knows tennis or has "picked up a racquet" can see that Nadal's shotmaking is 10 Slams better than Andy Murray's. It's clear. Nadal has many more shots in his arsenal than does Murray.

Also, Nadal is clearly a superior shotmaker to Federer. Nadal has 5 more MS titles despite being 5 years younger. Again, how could he have won more MS tournaments than Federer - being 5 years younger - if he wasn't a superior shotmaker?

Anyone who says that there are factors other than shotmaking which account for Nadal's extent and degree of success simply doesn't know the game and probably hasn't picked up a racquet in his life.

Nadal is the greatest shotmaker of this generation. He is clearly better than Federer in this regard. And Djokovic and Murray both have significantly worse shotmaking capability than the great Nadal, which is why they have significantly less titles to their names.

Nadal is just, by far, the best shotmaker of this generation. By far.

That's why he wins. That's why he won the recent matches against Janowicz, Djokovic, Federer, and Berdych: he simply has better shots than all of them.

That's it. Don't agree with me?

Go and "pick up a racquet". You'll figure it out soon enough if you do that.

No, Fed's forehand is as good. But, Fed & Nadal have the top 2 forehands in history. What Nadal has been able to accomplish with his forehand on the natural surfaces (13 Finals, 10 Slam victories, Plethora of Masters Shields) is simply amazing. No one merely grits and grunts to these kind of numbers.

Yeah, exactly. His forehand is that good. It is that amazing. That's what accounts for all those wins: his forehand.

RE: Rafael Nadal : What Makes Him Great

It is amazing to me how Nadal's astonishingly high first-serve percentage never comes up in discussions of why he has won so much. He wins so many cheap points off of this and in tight matches, those cheap points make a huge difference.

His high first-serve percentage has had much more to do with him pulling out tight matches against top opponents over the years than his forehand being as outstanding as everyone makes it out to be.

Non sequitur. His forehand is not the only reason for such numbers (high first-serve percentage has indeed helped), but since it has traditionally been the most devastating aspect of his game, it's played the largest role in his success.

One could say the exact same thing about Federer. And Sampras. How would this be a negative? Except that Nadal's serve has rarely been as much of a weapons theirs, and his forehand is considered one of the greatest in the game. Your opinion vs. the world, I guess.

RE: Rafael Nadal : What Makes Him Great

negative. the guy has pain otherwise why would he talk about it at all. he has constant pain in the knee.

and he wins damn near everything.

what losses are you talking about?

he did not go to new york to lose.

I don't think he is going to lose in new York but if he does, it will not be because of the knee.

the knee seems well enough for him to play. he has played with pain for a long time anyway.

the knee is not great but it appears well enough for now.

he needs to get off the hard courts ASAP after the u.s. open otherwise he will end up compromising and compounding the damn knee again.

negative general calitennis:

its his wheels, his topspin, and his will that is winning him those service games.

the same with the return: he does not have nole`s or andy`s return of serve on quicker surfaces because of the sheer mechanics of his very heavy topspin strokes.

those types of long, loopy/looping, strokes require more time to execute. and often that time is not available on quicker courts.

still I think he leads the world in some return stats this year but I have not checked them lately.

again its his wheels, his topspin, and his will that are largely responsible for winning those return games.

you don't really want nadal to have a serve like roger had or Sampras had. nobody would win a match against him.

He went to Wimbledon after winning French and all he his people could talk was that he was in tip-top shape. He lost there and suddenly we hear about the knees... Yeah Buddy...

RE: Rafael Nadal : What Makes Him Great

So often in the past I have mentioned the reason that Rafa and the other big 3 have remained on top for so long is that there is not another super teenager on the horizon. Eg.. Let me expand on how great a super Teenage Rafa was and a great player he is still. Rafa is the only player to win his 1st grand slam event that he has entered for the very 1st time. He has won a grand Slam event in every year since he has been on tour. He has a career H2H record against every player in the top 30. Have any men tennis player every held that distinction. At the USO, he has a career H2H advantage of every 32 seeded player. He has a double his career H2H record against the greatest player ever, Federer and if he beats him at the USO, he has beaten him at every slam(too bad they can't meet in the final this year because he would have had an opportunity for a career grand slam final over Roger). IMO, not only is Rafa the greatest super Teenager EVER, he has a slim but good shot to be the greatest player ever.
