I learnt this song when young too. My Aunt taught me it when all the family gathered round on Sunday afternoon for a sing-song which we had every week. It was very popular at the time. 1 of my Uncle's played guitar, 2 of my Uncle's played harmonica, Dad played bugle, my Aunt played xylophone & sung, my sister played recorder & everyone else just sung. We all had a good time. My Aunt had a dog with a toy which she called his ding-a-ling. Lol. When I 1st learnt it I didn't know about it's other meaning. (I've just lost my reputation for being little Miss Prim & Proper here, unfortunately). It has since been banned from being played on T.V. & radio for the double entendres.
