Roma was beautiful and powerful - and black and white really suited it, even though it would be sumptuous in colour. It was sumptuous in black and white. We also had Mank, which I enjoyed, and because it was a movie about making a movie, to an extent, being in black and white really focused my eye on the genius of those old great filmmakers, and films, which used light and shade to remarkable effect. There have been a good few black and white movies in the last few years and I hope this trend continues. I think it became too expensive to make black and whites for a while, but now the technology is better? You’d know this better than I.

Fun trivia: when Tarantino was in talks with Pierce Brosnan over a Bond idea when Pierce was Bond, a Casino Royale, written and directed by Tarantino, and starring Brosnan, they wanted to make it in black and white, and set it in the fifties or sixties. Now that’s a reboot, isn’t it? And a Tarantino black and white film might be something worth seeing…
I do think, like Roma and Belfast, B/W suits a "memory piece." If we're old enough, some of our youth was in B/W, if you know what I mean. Both of those films were shot on digital and converted to black and white, which is so much cheaper than actually shooting on black and white film. You are correct that it did become prohibitive, and is now. Shooting on film in black and white, either stills or motion picture is very rare anymore, and basically for art film. Shooting movies on film is rare enough, but there is an agreement with Kodak and the studios to shoot x-amount of films on actual film. Otherwise, Kodak would go out of business, and it would never be an option anymore. Same with the labs. Developing film is a chemical process, and someone has to keep those labs alive. I love film, and I don't want to see it go away.

Will and Jada Smith may be facing what’s being described as “one of the ugliest divorces in showbiz history”, according to reports.
It’s believed tension has allegedly grown between the pair following Will’s explosive actions at the Oscars last month where he slapped Chris Rock across the face for making light of Jada’s shaved head.
After he hit the comedian, Jada is thought to have been seen laughing from her seat. She later broke her silence and shared a cryptic post on Instagram where the mum-of-two said it was the “season of healing”.
While Will, 53, publicly apologised to both the Academy and Chris for his very public outburst, it’s thought to have put a strain on his relationship with his 50 year old wife.

A source told Heat Magazine: “Ever since the Oscars scandal, tensions between them have been palpable.

"There have been problems for years, but they're barely speaking right now. If they were to split, Will has a fortune of $350million that Jada would be entitled to half of under Californian law.
"It could be one of the ugliest divorces in showbiz history and drag on longer than Angelina's and Brad's did."

They added: "Will obviously doesn't want that, but there is only so much he can take."
OK! have approached Will and Jada’s reps for comment.

Will Smith has been allowed to keep his Oscar

Following his actions at the awards last month, Will has received a ten-year ban from the Oscars – however, it was ruled that the Suicide Squad actor was allowed to keep the award he won on the night for Best Actor.
Prior to the announcement, Will issued a lengthy statement where he apologised for slapping Chris.

“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive,” he began.
“My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.

I love movies that you don't see coming. I remember years ago going to the cinema to watch one of the big movies of the time. But unfortunately when we got there it was sold out. We opted for this as it was just about to start, few people were in the theatre. I guarantee we came out happier than those who went to see the main movie...

Now, let's face it...while the photos are fun, there is nothing but a headline and a first sentence...which are both pure speculation. Speculation on a divorce at all. They through in "ugliest divorce in Hollywood history" just for the fun of it. Did you google it? There's nothing. It's OK magazine. As I said, you're just being an old gossip. Which is cute, and the pictures above are fun. But I didn't take you for the type to take OK on face value. ;)

lol! Someone sent the article to me from a tweet. Thought it was topical. As you can imagine Foreign Affairs magazine is more my thing, but I was doing my duty as good forum citizen and adding to a fiercely debated topic :lulz1:

Anything with Emily Blunt is a winner for me. I’d watch her playing an invisible woman who’s never even seen on screen. I like Ewan MacGregor too, looks like a good cast, and feel good flick…

Speaking of Ewen MacGregor, just finished watching The Ghost Writer on Netflix, directed by Roman Polanski and based on the novel, The Ghost, by Robert Harris. Very good film, trimmed to the bone, excellent cast, including Pierce Brosnan as the former PM who’s writing his memoirs. MacGregor is the ghost writer dragged into something rather unexpected…

I thought it was very good, hopefully there’s a season 2. The main actor was very well cast..

The missus and my sister say he’s easy on the eye. I wouldn’t know. I was just very impressed by his legal knowledge!

But yeah, it was good stuff, some clever twists and of course, the courtroom drama is a really great genre, one of my favourites alongside spy dramas…

We don't have a Broadway thread, but this is the most stunning performances of a song, and a great cri-de-coeur. It's the last note that will catch your breath:

Top Gun ~ Maverick.

A Good watch for fans of the original... cheesy of course - but well made, and a nice nostalgia trip.

I've heard great things about this! My brother saw it on a giant screen and he said it was brilliant. Have to hand it to Tom Cruise, he has a great track record...

My sister wants to go & see that. She's asked me if I'm going to go to see it with her. (That was before the bus strike.)

Definitely worth watching on the big screen - the effects are good.
Yeah, I can imagine. I’ve only watched movies on the laptop since covid. No telly, no cinema. We’re thinking to go to the new Jurassic World to break the streak, but the reviews are so-so…

My niece said it was pretty bad, and she had very low expectations.

In her words, “ how can you screw up a movie when its dinosaurs run amuck? “

Your niece has articulated that perfectly - how tough can it be to make a scary thrill ride of a film with dinosaurs? I wonder what went wrong? Did they add too much of the old cast and lost focus?
