Let's examine the "joke". Chris words were "Jada, I love ya. G.I. Jane 2, can't wait to see it." My question to you is if you were with your family members or a neighbor said to you, Margaret , you look like GI Jane. Are you telling me you want your husband to assault your family members or neighbors?

Thank goodness Federberg and I are on the same page...about Will Smith sticking up for his wife, yes it took it too far

Men on this blog I hope that if you were in the same situation with your wife and someone 'make a joke' at her expense of having a auto immune problem,I hope you would defend your wife/partner.....you dont have to hit the person to make your voice heard
Chris Rock did not have to bring up Jada's lack of hair either just saying.

She says he did, so who are we to argue? Here she broke her silence after putting up with so much BS for decades. At least read the other side before you unfairly judge the man, based on misinformation (such as, she was his adopted daughter).

I do like this passage:
" All of life is filled with competing narratives, and the burden of interpretation is ultimately on the listener and his or her subjectively arrived-at sense of the truth."

Exactly, think about if Chris would have decked Will . What would the world say then? Chris showed a lot of character by keeping his composure and not retaliating. If that was the late Bernie Mac, Dave Chapelle, the Wayans Brothers (all 6 of them) Eddie Griffin or Eddie Murphy, (Lord know it was the late great Charlie Murphy) Will may not been able to accept his own award. This is why again I believe this was stage, Chris Rock has a brother and I know they had plenty of fights.
It didn't seem staged but you're right about how Chris Rock reacted. He took the high road and was able to joke immediately, even when Will Smith was roaring at him and very upset. Situation could have turned incredibly nasty if Rock hadn't been so smart...

I know Jada has had a lot worst said to her than being compared to a Demi Moore movie character from the 90s. If Jada would have laughed I seriously doubt that we would be having this conversation.

A course most men would defend their women if it was something hurtful especially if they are not a celebrity who is a target for jokes.

They live the life, Margaret. They use and abuse it too. We don't even know if Chris Rock even knew she had alopecia, but he made a joke. I think they should have handled themselves a whole lot better. They could have shrugged it off and kept their dignity. That would have been the best defence, if they even felt so offended...

Good to know,I thought as much.
This incident really should not have happened full stop.I have heard Will Smith played a great 'Richard Williams' I have not seen the film, quite frankly the people I feel for are the William's family.

Think about what Chris said after getting slapped, " That was the greatest night in the history of television". Who says that? Most people would say, " MFR or aint that a bitch, MFR sucker punched me. I see ya behind the curtain. Chris said none of that but kept on with the show. hmmm

It definitely spoiled the show, it's all that anyone is talking about, which is a pity for everyone - including Will Smith, who's big moment was ruined. I doubt they'll take the award from him. Hollywood people aren't renowned for having principles. They'll sniff the wind in a few days and notice it's blowing elsewhere, and all over somebody else, and this will become part of history...

Agreed. Will totally highjacked the moment. It was a time to reflex on the greatest coach (Parent) ever yet Will made it all about him. He got lifetime of Hollywood history by just focusing on HIS (Wil's ) STORY not the brilliant accomplishments of the Williams family. I know deep down inside, they are pissed. No body is gonna remember the movie but Will slapped the piss out of Chris Rock because Jada rolled her eyes.

As I said before Will Smith had no right to hit Chris Rock, there are other ways to voice your disapproval.,he should have just sat in his chair like he did and told Rock to shut up.Anyway when I get time I will watch King Richard.
I suggest everyone watch Coda it was a brilliant film and I picked it to win.I also loved Belfast.

that's why Will could have reference and made awareness in his speech about her condition during his acceptance speech ( he was probably the most heavily favorite actor in that category in awhile because there was zero marketing for Macbeth for example here in the US). It will be interesting to see how much of an Oscar bump that film gets. Tell u the truth I liked Aunjuane Ellis as Oracene acting performance better than Will's. Yet its Will's day too bad he didn't have a cool " booty" while sitting in the front section of the theater.

I was glad Kenneth Branagh got the screenplay award. So many nominations in so many categories, he's really incredibly talented, and maybe he suffered from being the early favourite for Best Director and Best Film? I don't know, but good for him in getting a writing award. His ex-missus has an Oscar for writing, too. Very talented lady, Emma Thompson...

Look, I wrote that in the moment. Anyone writing today has had to the time to think about it and the benefit of the editorial opinions of others. I think it was an overreaction on Will Smith's part, and I also agree with @Federberg that neither does Rock serve excessive pity. And I won't entertain the "what if" of had it been Amy Schumer, etc., because the circumstances would have been different, so I am I to know? I'm just not going to manufacture an outrage over this that I don't feel. The man got slapped, not assaulted.

That, among other places, is where you’re wrong. I read an article in Forbes Magazine today entitled Slapping Chris Rock Could Cost Will Smith More Than His Oscar which reviews the incident from a legal perspective. Here is the relevant section:

“The question that millions of people are asking this morning is whether Smith’s actions legally constituted assault and battery. While the Oscars are broadcast to a massive audience around the world, they are held in California where assault and battery are, by statute, two different crimes. It is clear that what happened at the Oscars was an assault under the California statutory definition.”

Solomon explains that California Penal Code 240 PC deals with assault, while California Penal Code 242 PC deals with battery. “It is clear that what happened at the Oscars was an assault under the California statutory definition. An assault is an unlawful attempt, coupled with a present ability, to commit a violent injury on the person of another.”

Solomon details the pivotal moment Smith first got up from his seat. “When Smith left his seat in response to Rock’s comment about his wife, walked up to the stage and approached him, he had the ability to commit a violent injury. This in itself is an assault. Legally, the assault is not predicated upon a successful commission of another act, such as striking the other person. Simply a threatening act or statement that causes another person to believe that they are about to be attacked constitutes an assault in California.”

Per Solomon, assault under California Penal Code 240 PC, known as “simple assault” is a misdemeanor and is punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and/or up to six months in county jail. He also claims that this incident fits the California statutory definition of battery.

“A battery is any willful and unlawful use of force or violence upon the person of another. When Smith actually hit Rock, whether it was a strong open-handed slap or a closed-fist punch doesn’t matter at all according to the law, and he committed an extremely well-documented battery under California law.”

Battery under California Penal Code 242 PC is a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $2,000 and/or up to six months in county jail. This punishment, says Solomon, would likely never happen to Smith.”

Yes, Virginia, there was an assault.

Branagh is a very talented man,I am glad he won the screen play award.Sometimes if your name comes up early about getting an award at the Oscars,it can go against you.A lot of people were raving about Nicole Kidman and performance of playing Lucille Ball, well that fizzled out,she received no awards at all.

On another note, I'm ticked Jessica Chastain won for the Tammy Faye Baker movie, why is the Academy continually impressed with beautiful women putting on prosthetics to make themselves look disfigured, fatter or different. That is NOT acting, that's just the makeup department and special effects.

Preach! I’m also sick of people getting Oscars for portraying a real person. They’re being rewarded for doing an impersonation, not so much acting. Just think how many times it has happened in the last decade or so of actors portraying real people and getting an Oscar: Abraham Lincoln, Tammy Faye Baker, Richard Williams, Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher, Judy Garland, Freddie Mercury, Stephen Hawking, Edith Piaf, Katharine Hepburn, Ray Charles, Harvey Milk, Queen Elizabeth II, King George VI, Truman Capote, etc.
