People made so much of Nad's win over Murray. He's got a lot of work to do yet.

Murray lost to Stan "the inconsistent man" too. Clearly not playing great. There was more pushing going on in that match than down the docks with the local dealers :snicker

U said fatigue or lack of stamina wouldn't be an issue today, You was being tongue n cheek but you knew Ferrer battle would weigh heavily today.

I think that positives people saw the other day are now being downgraded unreasonably. Excuses for Stan and Andy, who were both nevertheless mauled. Had Rafa struggled to win there, imagine what would be said. These would be virtual defeats. Kinda like they're not even victories now. :cover

Fact: Rafa is in much better nick now than he was after Flushing Meadows, and this is the essence of the Incline. But he's lost handy twice to Novak, and he was even beaten by Federer, so his results against the best two players this year have to improve. That was always going to be the case...

Nice spin.

But Stan was sleep walking and Murray was a no show. And Ferrer, who always wants more money? He pushed out to a lead and then folded.

We will be able to tell better at the beginning of the year if this is an incline or a plateau near the precipice. :)

Maybe we should try spin more matches. I wonder why Stan sleepwalked that match, and not the others? I suppose it's because he lost that match? :cover

And Murray was a no-show, except the match where he wasn't.

So from all this, we can take zero positives for Nadal... :laydownlaughing

I was being dead serious. It made no difference. Nadal is one of the fittest guys on tour and if you want to tell me that these days one 3 set match tires him out you're gonna have to concede he was EPO'd to the gills in the early days, AO '09 in particular.

When someone is trying to pull positives from a beat down, it often means his guy is sucking hind teat.

I think you must have missed about seven pages and sixteen threads, bro. Nobody is trying to take positives from "a beatdown". Where did you get that from? :cover

No sillier than AP claiming Nadal's tired these days from a 2 h 37 min match against a nobody like Ferrer but yet could play a near 6 hour final at the AO '12 and a 5 hr 14 min match against Verdasco at the AO '09 and fresh as a daisy against Federer in the final. Can't have it both ways. What exactly happened to his fitness 'cos that's quite a drop methinks?!

You don't thinks, that's the problem. 2009 Oz is almost 6 years ago. 2012 Oz is almost 4 years ago. In the meantime, a lot of water under the bridge... :cover

Again Kieran, I think your boy is on the decline of his career.

Next year, if he gets through the early rounds we'll see how he does against a fresh and focused Stan or Murray in Oz. Then we'll see how he does against the old guy or Novak.

4 years is nothing. I'm twice the age of many guys in the gym and way fitter and stronger than them. Fitness and shape don't disappear that drastically unless a key factor has changed.

Like people made the same of Novak's win over Nadal on his best surface and against not yet the best Nadal and his worst surface, so what's your point?

You'd have to provide some evidence that Stan and Andy weren't "focussed." Sounds a bit like fanboy propaganda to me, though of course it's possible Stan suddenly became focussed after being thrashed by Nadal. Your argument would make sense then. :cover

Your mathematics is even poor: we're not trying to take positives from "a beatdown." It was two beatdowns... ;)

Rafa against Novak in their clay matches played far higher quality tennis than Stan and Andy did against Rafa this week. To claim otherwise is just denial.

You're obviously eating more than flapjacks, then. :p

Fitness and shape do disappear as players get older, that's the nature of ageing (well, for some players, anywat :dodgy: ) but nobody said Rafa's "fitness and shape disappeared." Where are you getting that from? A-P saying that Rafa may have been tired? I disagree with that assessment, but even if he was, it woudn't mean that's why he lost, or that his "fitness and shape disappeared..." :cover

Don't be silly, bro. You've joined the dark side. The fact is, I said before the match that Novak would win. I've given credit where it's due. It's a pity you're too blind to do the same... :nono

Whatever the case, Djokovic's fitness and Nadal's lack of it will be the number one reason that Djokovic passes Nadal on the GOAT rankings by the time it's all said and done. H2H, Total Slams, Masters titles and total tour titles will be in Nole's favor soon. The final nail in the coffin will be when Nole wins the FO. Until then, that will be Nadal's last little bit of sunshine he has left.
