At this point, I think it's safe to assume your World of Tennis '74 is incorrect, as you've suspected. The ATP and the ITF sites don't mention this mysterious 24th tournament, so it was probably a typo on someone's part.

It's not a typo. This single mistake can make Smith the 4th man at the end of 1973. His total of 163.5 divided by 23 = 7.109, Okker's 202.5 divided by 29 = 6.983.

I am now sure that this mistake is genuine. The first of many in my chain of mistakes.

The second is Newcombe's total of 17, in reality 16.

There's a few more I am currently running through. I'm just a few moments away from putting the 1973 ranking system puzzle together.
