I love these old movies, too. Sometimes I get tired of the digital special effects in today's movies. They seem fake, too amped up. Can you imagine what Ben-Hur would be like if they filmed it today? :nono

Actually, Ben Hur is pretty much "The 300." Oiled bodies, sandals and lots of testosterone. Great chariot scene, though. The rest of the list is Classic!

I noticed Britbox is on Gold Coast of Australia. One of my brothers lives in Brisbane. I wonder if he's going to the tournament next year. It's a great tournament though only 250.

Definitely. Federer has committed to playing Brisbane. I was planning to go anyway, but that news rubber-stamped the deal.

Yes, but my point is the enjoyment of watching something like Ben-Hur which doesn't have modern digital special effects. I get tired of some of the new films, which are weighted down with CGI.

Today, a long shot of a crowd, a battle scene, or a stadium full of people would be all CGI. It's far less expensive than actually filling a stadium with real people.

Part of what I enjoy about films like Ben-Hur is knowing the people in the stands during the chariot race are real. It's more documentary-like, if you will.

Hello all!

I wrote a blog text about how commercialism is destroying racing in Formula 1:

http://augustonsports.blogspot.fi/2013/08/how-commercialism-is-destroying-sports.html

Maybe doesn't interest you too much but one of my next texts will similarly discuss about tennis.

I think I'll write yet that in my 'old' blog, as I originally meant to include it in the same text with F1 but it would've become too long.

After that I may begin to post my tennis texts here.

Here's my 25 to go on a desert island trip. No particular order of preference - just thrown in the back.

1. Lord of the Rings: Two Towers
2. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
3. Shutter Island
4. Grease
5. The Godfather Part I
6. The Godfather Part II
7. Goodfellas
8. Scarface
9. The Shining
10. 28 Days Later
11. Blackhawk Down
12. Top Gun
13. Gangs of New York
14. The Shawshank Redemption
15. Star Wars
16. The Lives of Others
17. Southern Comfit
18. Raging Bull
19. Pulp Fiction
20. Platoon
21. The Lost Boys
22. The Empire Strikes Back
23. Contagion
24. One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest
25. Gladiator

+ quick grab for two more - True Romance and Click.

Loved Top Gun (sorry about Goose), Breakfast Club (I love every Molly Ringwald film) and the Lost Boys (who didn't love the 2 Corey's?). True Romance was great too (I feel the same way about Christian as I do about Molly). Actually, there's not too many movies from that era that I didn't like.

Good movie lists!

I will tack on a few more (and try not to repeat what other have already said):
Evil Dead 2
Bringing out the Dead (super underrated IMO)
Chungking Express
American Splendor
Jurassic Park
Hunger
Naked
Trainspotting
The Devil and Daniel Webster
Lost Highway
Videodrome

I mostly didn't bold the rest because I haven't seen them. Interesting point about Bringing out the Dead, which is Scorcese, right? I'll give it a look.

Yeah it's scorcese. In my opinion, it is his last really great movie with that same noir grit that he had in the 70s! Nick Cage is cast right (which is pretty rare).

The Devil and Daniel Webster
Lost Highway - I watched that a million times just to figure it out
Videodrome

I must say I've never seen Bringing out the Dead, so I'll add that to the list. Also "Naked."

Naked is fantastic but absolutely Brutal and quite difficult to watch. It's weird seeing David Thewlis (Professor Lupin) play such a dispicable character. But the performance and cinematography are so good.

I should have mentioned "citizen kane" as well. Hollywood high brass have called that the most perfect movie of its day. it may even have been required watching for those studying film making at various schools.

well I can handle both. old school and some new school. first terminator was ok.

the first highlander was ok as well.

2nd terminator had way too many special effects.

300 was about 94% accurate historically so I did not have any issues with it in terms of special effects and the fact that they never left the studio to make it.

gladiator was just an awesome story. one just sits on the edge and follows the story to its absolute conclusion.

that hot blonde in that movie is in her 50`s now and gay. at least that is what I heard anyway. a friend was talking about that movie and her. I forget her name. I want to say it is Kelly something. maybe Kelly McGuire or something like that.

it was a great movie of its day. I saw it many years later as I am not much of a fan of tom cruise.

those fighter jets got my attention and of course that hot blonde.

Good General, Lawrence of Arabia is a fav. of mine also. Did you enjoy the homage to it in Prometheus?

I have yet to see Prometheus general riotbeard. It is on my list.

Lawrence of Arabia was amazing. peter o'toole has almost no equals in his line of work. I am surprised he never won an Oscar.

another one that we should have mentioned was charlton heston`s "Khartoum". fantastic film.

thanks baron britbox. that was the name indeed.

well now that you are in Australia, I am going to throw a tennis trivia question at you:

who is the only Australian player ever to drop tennis for 20 years to take up farming, and then return to competitive tennis?
