Other than the first two, this isn't a ranking, just a list as they pop into my head. I'm a movie nut, so I'll have to force myself to stop at some point:
Persona
8 1/2
Contact
Annie Hall
Star Trek VIII: First Contact
The Lives of Others
Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
Children of Men
Alien
Bringing Up Baby
Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
The Fire Within
Apocalypse Now
Dog Day Afternoon
Fanny & Alexander
Beautiful Thing
Howard's End
Rosemary's Baby
The Big Blue
Kieslowski's Three Colors trilogy (especially Blue)
OK, I'll stop for now. In about 30 minutes, I'll think, "How could I have possibly forgotten ___?"
This is such a good list, for me. I'm rather less into the sci-fi, but I don't judge genres when a film is good. I'll copy it and comment, as I don't know who otherwise to leap in.
8 1/2 - absolutely one of my top favorites.
Contact - surprising; I've never revisited that film, but will consider
Annie Hall - if there's a "perfect" WA film, it's probably that
Star Trek VIII: First Contact
The Lives of Others
Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
Children of Men - Though I think I prefer "Y tú mamá también" from Cuarón
Alien - scariest film ever
Bringing Up Baby - Though I think may favored screwballs would be "His Girl Friday" and "The Philadelphia Story"
Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown - Excellent choice, though my favorite Almodovar is probably "Talk to Her."
The Fire Within - have not see this, but I will
Apocalypse Now
Dog Day Afternoon
Fanny & Alexander
Beautiful Thing
Howard's End
Rosemary's Baby
The Big Blue
Kieslowski's Three Colors trilogy (especially Blue)
- Agree completely; originally my favorite was "Red," but I have come back to "Blue"
_______________
To add my own (some about love of the art, and some pure sentiment):
I agree with Godfather (1) and would add (2)
Roman Holiday
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Dazed and Confused
Fanny, Marius, Cesar (French trilogy; and even the Hollywood version, just "Fanny.")
The Conformist
Last Tango in Paris
The Garden of the Finzi-Contini
Death of a Cyclist
The Red Balloon
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (for endlessly quotable and absurdist)
Die Hard
L'Avventura
Rififi
The Little Fugitive
Breathless
I won't go on until others comment. I'm sure this is not exclusive favorites, but a way to expose others to great and fun films.
